It's a technique used in animal training a lot. At least that's where I first encountered the term. The only difference really between us and your dog is we have the capability of understanding how we're being trained. But just because we can understand it, doesn't make it any less effective. The entire basis of our civilization is built off it. You break the law, you get negative reinforcement, from jail or fines, you work, and at minimum you're rewarded by having food and shelter, and enjoyable activities like destiny. You don't, and you live in a box under a bridge.

Pretty spot on. And excuse me for elaborating Im just a few semesters short of my masters in psychology so I get nitpicky with terms haha Reinforcement is anything that produces an end result in which the behavior is more likely to occur. Punishment is something that diminishes its occurrence. Positive and negative should be thought of as simply adding something or taking something away. In this way, punishment can be negative or positive. For ex: Negative punishment would be when you take a kids privileges away and the end result is him not doing the bad behavior again. Positive punishment would be you hit the kid and the end result is not doing the behavior again (or at least a decrease in occurrence). So jail is something that can be viewed as mostly negative because you are taking away rights. It's negative because something was taken away not because it's a punishment. In behavioral conditioning the end result is really what determines if it was reinforcement or punishment. Assuming it decreased the criminal behavior in the future tho; it would be negative punishment. For example. You hit a kid. Positive punishment? You don't know until you see an effect on the behavior. Let's say he rebels and to spite you actually does it more. It would be classified as positive reinforcement. Sorry I went off on a tangent. The intricacies of behavioral conditioning are interesting to me. -_-

  • Everything you said is 100% true. The effects were first observed with dogs, I believe.
