I THINK you'll be able to play the first three parts straight away but I'm not certain.
I switched from a disc version to a digital version a few weeks ago and everything was fine. All my characters, gear, DLC etc. You'll just have to redownload Destiny and that took me an entire day

I think the characters and everything will be ok, but i am not sure, if i can play the first 3 parts immediately after download.. .:) Maybe download will be activated on 15. September.

Alright so I just checked the Bungie website and this is what it says. "Play it now - prepurchase the digital collectors edition and immediately begin playing Destiny and both expansions today!" So yeah, you'll be able to play everything straight away
