Help me out.. I fail to see how this is different than what Bungie has already done. Etheric light is already in the game and armor reforging is on the way.

I think in this case, it applies to stat rolls and perks, as well. Let's say I have a set of IB gauntlets, with damn good Intellect and Discipline stats. Problem is, they have Auto Rifle Loader and Grenades charge Melee. I don't use Autos, and I'd rather recharge my grenade with my melee. I have another set of gauntlets with all the above, but they look stupid. Thus, I swap those stats onto the IB gauntlets.

Indeed. Because, let's be fair, there's a lot of good gear that is really ugly.
