Toland is also attributed with the Shadow Price auto rifle, and while this is pure speculation, the similarities between the Bad Juju and the Thorn/Nechrochasm indicate that the Juju is Toland's attempt to create a hive "Weapon of Sorrow" for what reason though, is a mystery.

I knew about Shadow Price, sadly you can't get it anymore (I'd love to have it). And oops. Didn't mean for it to post to the Destiny Forum. Just wanted it to be public for anyone who looks at my group. That's what the whole Dark Guardian shpeel was about.

TECHNICALLY You still can, in Vanguard Tiger and below strikes, you can still obtain Vanilla engrams, which decrypt into vanilla gear. The odds of getting it are incredibly low though
