Forget upgrading the old crap. Buy new stuff from the vanguard. The light is already maxed to 36 (higher than the old stuff) and the other upgrades don't require ascendant materials.

As far as armor that's what I've done. However a lot of the older weapons I've kept are much better than the new weapons and still require energy to fully upgrade. Specifically the VoG weapons.
