I just picked up "The Riddle of Scheherazade and Other" so I have lots of riddles. I got it from my local library :D It's especially useful for anyone looking to get into computer science.
Here's a paraphrasing of #20 "What Color?"
Three boys visit a farmer and the farmer says there's a mule out back and it's either brown, black, or gray. Each of the boys throws in a guess and the farmer says "at least one of you is right and at least one of you is wrong."
Boy #1 guesses that the mule isn't black
Boy #2 guesses that the mule is either brown or gray
Boy #3 guesses that the mule is brown
So what color is the mule?
gray
-
brown
How do you figure? Everyone else says it's gray and I said one of them was right.
-
Hmm actually couldnt all 3 colors work?
-
Possibly, if the mule is a mix of the three colors than each of the boys is at least partially right. But in this case, the mule is gray.
-
Gray. Let's assume Boy 1 is right; then at least one of the other 2 must be wrong. If #2 is wrong, then the mule isn't black, isn't brown, and isn't gray, which leads to a contradiction since it must be one of the colors. If #3 is wrong, then the mule isn't black and isn't brown, leaving the last color, gray. Likewise, let's assume #2 is right. Then if #1 is wrong, we get a contradiction since the mule is either black or it isn't. But if #3 is wrong, then it still works because it leaves the mule to, again, be the color gray.
