You need shot package. It is the optimal primary perk for a shotgun

Why over RF? Might not less dropped off damage with distance be better than a tighter spread?

I have both RF and SP in two shotguns but I feel that RF is better. I also tried shooting a wall with a shotty that has SP on it and one without and I barely noticed any difference in pellet scatter

Because you can max range the shotgun and have shotpack enstead of just max range. I'm not 100% sure, but I dont think rangefinder will take range beyond the cap limit.

Do you have a link to a study showing rangefinder actually reduces damage drop off when range is already maxed without range finder? Increase range on any weapon naturally reduces damage drop off. I haven't seen anything showing the damage drop of is intrinsic to rangefinder and not to the range given by rangefinder.

Plus tighter spread basically increases range as well

Rf is useful but it doesn't help projectile spread. Shot package ensures that more of your pellets will hit the target, resulting in more damage
