It's a shame that an environment which ideally should be free from such politics is instead being more and more bogged down by them. Open discourse is necessary for academia to function well, but a lot students don't want to be challenged anymore, and the faculty isn't taking a stand for those that do.
How do you counter such a situation? Does it run its course?

It's an interesting situation to me because I've never experienced it firsthand. I don't know what discussion is like in the social sciences or humanities, but it seems obvious that the discussion has to happen; how else do we learn? On the other hand, I do empathize with people whose identities are the subject of these debates. The act of addressing prejudiced opinions does legitimize them, and that can seem like a personal attack. On the other [i]other [/i]hand, how else are you supposed to change those opinions if you don't talk about them at all? Again, it's just not an issue that comes up in my STEMmy world, so it's hard to understand.
