The timer is there because the chest is timed. Timer runs out : chest is gone. Also with the timer you can see how long you have left to get to the chest as the location is rather random. You have a chance to loot the chest you are not entitled to anything so if you do your bounty and cant find the chest, try again. In archer's line there are 5 spots that i know of:
1. off to the left next to the building,
2. From 1. a little bit further to the middle under the monorail
3. on top of the monotail
4. Next to the radarpost antenna
5. At the last patrol thing before you go to anchor of light
sometimes the chest seems to spawn a bit later than right after the fight making you think it is far away only to come Back to where you killed the boss and see it Spawned close by.
Happy hunting :)

So even if I check all the right spots, I could still miss a chest because even though the chest is on a very short timer, the chest might not even be there yet while the timer is counting down and my key is expiring?! Really. Is there anyone out there who doesn't consider this a broken game mechanic?! Why is the chest even on a timer? And if it must be on a timer, why such a short one? That's barely enough time for me to reach all the spots IF I already know them all. It makes the ether chests not worth the hassle to me. Which makes me want to avoid the packs of prowling wolves. Which makes me want to avoid areas where they're prowling. Which doesn't leave me many places to go outside of Mars. Considering I have no real interest in Trials of Osiris or Prison of Elders, considering I can no longer buy pre House of Wolves vendor gear I wanted and that I don't have enough vault space for all the new gear little of which appeals to me aesthetically, considering that the new levels on Nightfall and similar activities have gotten prohibitively difficult for me at my current level with no way to increase my level other than to do activities that are no fun for me, this "expansion" has actually reduced the activities I can enjoy. This game was a lot more fun to me before House of Wolves was unlocked. This makes day two that I'm on the forums when I could be playing. Way to go, Bungle

Your logic is very flawed. You can kill the pack and don't loot a chest. You can be in an area and don't kill the pack. Nothing is forcing you to do one or the other. Just play the game how you did before... Nothing has changed it'll be like you never bought HoW.

I know nothing is forcing me to hunt for the chest, but if I killed or helped kill the prowling wolves, then I want my ether chest engrams, and it makes me angry not to get them, especially after the day I saw a guy get two legendary engrams back to back from the same ether chest spawn. And I know I don't have to participate in the battles, but for some reason it's hard for me to stay away, especially if I see people struggling with them. Sometimes I could confine myself to just killing off regular patrol enemies to reduce what the other players had shooting at them. I tried avoiding the areas where wolf packs prowl, but I had a bounty for six patrol missions on the moon and you always start in Archer's Line and one thing led to another. More than one person has told me that maybe this just isn't the game for me. More and more, I'm beginning to suspect they're right. I had made plans to Destiny with a friend this weekend, but maybe I'll be lucky and she'll prefer to do something else.
