You must not have been gaming long because if you have ever played any early PC online games, lag comp didn't exist. If you had lag, it was because your connection sucked, not because the game's adjusted itself so that people with slower connections would have a "fair" chance at playing on the server. It didn't even become commonplace until online multiplayers became big with consoles. Before then, you just looked for servers that had low ping and were in the same country.
