I think this still fits my theory. I think Rasputin was aware of the FWC time machine and he used it to create the Vex and rewrite reality so that the traveller and the darkness never exist. That's the only way to truly and permanently save humanity and if Rasputin's only goal is to win then I think this is the only possibility. Both have to go. I think the time travel component of this has everyone stepping over themselves and forgetting that time travel means that there is no timeline. It's all one interconnected, tangled mess with no definitive beginning or end. So, when people keep saying "yeah but the Vex predate humanity" they're only half right if we accept that there's time travel. Rasputin would have to control the complete span of human history including making sure that he could protect the earth from as far back as he could possibly go. He wouldn't assume that he was the only entity capable of coming up with his strategy so he'd plan a defense just in case some other faction travelled back to try and engage him in the past. As for the biological element of the Vex, I'm assuming that it's a required part of the plan. Rasputin would need something that was incredibly plentiful, easily replicated, extremely basic and very very old to serve as a foundation for his space-time network. It makes sense that he would use something alive that was also silicone based but still not sentient enough to be bent towards the light or the dark. The plankton is being used like a timeless, pre-existing biological nanite swarm that Rasputin tamed and computerized so that no matter where the Vex show up in time, there are huge numbers of plankton waiting to be used. One axiomatic bead thrown into the ocean and the Vex have an unlimited supply of robo-jizz to do whatever they want with. Maybe that's why you die when you shoot your feet in the water. The wound lets the Vex plankton in.

 • Or maybe it's just a glitch in the game, you know...

 • One of the grimoire cards mentions that Rasputin shut himself down during the collapse because he couldn't see a single outcome of that event in wich humanity would survive, meaning that he was just as surprised as anyone else about the sudden attack of the darkness. He faked death and thus survived, but i doubt he knew anything about the fwc machine. Rasputin is just an AI that controls weapon systems and, although he's incredibly smart, I doubt he constructed the Vex, and if the Vex were his plan to save humanity then he utterly failed, because he just made some time travelling killer robots. Also, Rasputin is not infinitely powerful, he couldn't even predict Omniguls attack, or at least he wasn't able of protecting himself from the hive without our help. So much for the creator of the Vex. Last but not least, you say that the reason the Vex attack guardians is because Rasputin only wanted to save the humans that were not affected by either the darkness or the light, wich makes no sense to me, since the whole human race had already been under the influence of the Traveler for ages, and the golden age that the Traveler started was the reason that humanity could make Rasputin in the first place.

 • Well maybe you just found the answer. You say that the Vex couldnt have been made to combat the Light/Dark because humans had been under the light's influence for generations. What if the Vex WAS designed to combat the Dark and as a flaw in its creation it could not distinguish Light from Dark.

 • The stranger said the vex are an evil so dark they despise other evil. So you might be on the right track.

 • Nah, i highly doubt that Rasputin made the Vex. It's just a far-fetched theory that isn't supported by any of the grimoire cards. Rasputin tried to save humanity, failed, shut himself down and then the Traveler did something at the end of the collapse to stop the Darkness from immediatly killing all humans. During one of the missions you accidentally release Rasputin. The Vex are probably some kind of bacteria like thingy, but they're not here to save humankind, they're just one of the four species of aliens who try to kill us. The one is a golden age defence system, the other is an ancient species of alien, they're not in any way related. There is as just as little evidence that Rasputin made the Vex as there is that he made Fallen, Hive and Cabal. If you can find any grimoire card that proves or supportes the 'Rasputin made the Vex'-theory, please let me know, but until then i'll just call this bullshit.

 • The problem I have with your theory is actually the crux of it. You say many are forgetting time travel, but as far as we know right now I don't think there is any evidence of it outside of the vault of glass except for possibly the stranger with the FWC. It all could still be explained by the vex simply inhabiting the sol system before humanity without rasputins intervention. It was my impression Rasputin let down the defenses to let enough of humanity die to use their light as a weapon against the darkness forcing the current stalemate. I thought the vex were more a parallel to humanity. We both left out world and discovered a god on Mars. Humanity the traveller and the vex it's black heart. They were likely there as the brass gardeners before the black heart gained power. I may have some things mixed up i didn't get any sleep and I'm having a hard time concentrating

 • The Vex have time travel and are apparently working on the ability to reshape reality itself. I'm assuming that means by rewriting time to their specifications but there's not enough evidence to do more than guess how what we do know is connected. Rasputin's cards are huge puzzles. What I took from them was that he tried everything he knew to beat the darkness and failed. Then, he figures out how to win and the first step was apparently letting his guard down. I'm assuming, again, he did so to fake his death and the death of humanity so that the traveller could have time to create guardians out of the dead humans and then heal enough to continue distracting the darkness. I think Rasputin has a plan and the reality is that he's his own faction playing everyone else against each other so they all ignore what he's doing. I'm almost certainly wrong but this is just the best, most entertaining plot I could think of from what we've been given from the story so far.

 • But the Traveller is Rasputin, and he had to come back as the traveller to create himself.

 • I don't think that's how it is at all. That being said, there's nit really enough facts to rule it out completely either. For me it would be a lot harder to make your way fit the story.

 • Iv read a few theories about Rasputin time traveling. But how does an AI time travel? It's just a program.

 • That's the thing, it really couldn't time travel on its own. That's the only reason I think the Vex exist. To do Rasputin's bidding across time where he can't go and can't physically manifest if he could. I think Rasputin co-opted the FWC Exo time travelling Stranger and created the first Vex plankton and sent them back to primordial Earth to establish themselves in the primordial soup. Once there were enough of them to form a super computer network they could begin to manipulate their surroundings and start building the first Vex constructs. Those constructs would create bigger and more complex constructs until the Vex as we know them were created. For as much as we know about the Vex, this fits as well as anything else I think.

 • Except they all want to kill us? If Rasputin wanted to save humanity from the darkness and the traveller, creating a race of advanced killer robots probably isn't the best way to do it. And messing with time travel, to that extent would be more likely to make humanity not exist rather than save it.

 • They never attacked us as far as I've seen. The speaker sent us to attack them. If my theory is correct, we're nit human enough to be salvageable as part of Rasputin's plan anyway so we're expendable tools of the light as far as he's concerned. The crux of my theory is that Rasputin created the Vex so that he could purge both light and dark from human history thus truly and permanently protecting them and winning the unwinnable scenario. Oddly, as he was created as a product of the golden age, he'll cease to exist as soon as he's successful.

 • I'm pretty sure in one of the cards it says they attacked first. Also one says we have tried to communicate with them only to be met with aggression. The vex were born in the black garden and worship the darkness (well some do) so they aren't doing a very good job. I also don't see how the vex fighting anything in our present would reset things and undo the golden age.

 • I'm sure that in the present they'll attack guardians without a doubt. If I'm right, and that's the qualifier applicable to everything I've posted here, guardians aren't any more human than hive are. They're just light and dark versions of the same zombie soldier doing the bidding of its master. If the Vex have mastered time and they want to eliminate humanity, they could do so quite easily. The present is about ridding reality and space time of any trace of the light or dark and because that's impossible in our reality, I'm guessing that they're just building infrastructure to facilitate the rest of their plan. If the VoG transcends realities, it can be everywhere at once and no matter where it stops it still needs infrastructure.
