Solution:
When you open the vault it takes you to a main vault menu with Weapons, Armor and Item tabs. When you select one of them the screen transitions over to a Weapon screen, Armor screen or Item screen, each of which has a 60 item capacity. This way you have only 60 things displayed at one time (so you can bring back the item comparison tool) and vault space is tripled.

I honestly don't think anyone requires 60 weapon slots on any emotional/mental level. They just need to create a separate holding area for every exotic weapon the game has. 19/20 slots is enough for a player to collect 2-3 of every weapon type and still have some space, exotics take up the majority of my vault

Even with how easy it sounds and probably how simple it would be to program the RAM on the old Gen can't handle it. When you would open that vault the system will call the entire vault not just the tab. That would actually take more memory than what they did

I think the issue here is that they are having trouble programming multiple pages.
-
Wait... How much are they paid? Cause as far as know that sounds like one of the easiest things as far as programming. They already know the necessary functions as all the other menues have multiple pages

It does sound easy doesn't it? I can't vouch for how simple it would really be, but I can say for sure that Bungie should be capable of this and much more. Destiny is very different from Halo, but from what we have seen in the past I don't think it is too much to expect a little bit more than what they are giving us :/
