First off, I think that the commercial, social and critical reception of Destiny will make a great book someday, so maybe you should grow your essay into that. I'd be happy to contribute if you liked. I hate the game for many reasons (feel free to journey through my comments from optimistic noob to exasperated sour patch). I will repeat a few of my thoughts here though: * From the title through to every element, Destiny is nightmarishly economical. The title itself is a lowest-common-denominator for "hey kids, adventure time!", the character designs are lazy Halo / Warhammer 40K ripoffs, the weapons are the most basic of the basic classes found in the FPS genre (pistol, machine gun x2, heavy machine gun, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, shotgun... token energy weapon) and of course, the story is leaner than a side salad. * lazy. There are elements of the game in the first mission that are never seen or heard from again, as if they simply forgot trip mines and peril were in the game. Other things such as ships are simply undeveloped, and so modifying these load-screen distractions is pointless. * patronising. Bungie have laboured for years on this thing, put out something that still feels incomplete, and when we ask for anything at all they talk to us like we're stupid. They have paid for an IGN podcast to hype their tired two-day experience, and even the cast struggle to be enthusiastic on many occasions. The most recent episode simply seemed to run out of anything of merit to discuss, opting to dissect the puny topic of which bounties we like / don't like. Also, Destin stuck the knife into the community for daring to tell Bungie what we want (without us this car crash wouldn't exist, Destin). So, we are force fed vomit shaders and expected to grind for weapon skins through the same minuscule content ad infinitum and find that fulfilling. There are no MMO elements here. There's nothing to explore, but if anybody wants to tirelessly retread five levels for a rocket launcher, go right ahead. * outmatched. There are better games already. I returned to DCUO and haven't played Destiny in months. I dunno if I can add much more, I got tired of banging the same drum as many others a while back. If they don't want to listen and give people what they want (and it's all common sense that should have been done anyway given the time and money) then they can perpetuate this oddity without me.

  • Thank you for this feedback. I'm actually specifically writing a Cause/Effect essay on why the destiny community is divided into two catagories (those who hate it, those who love it). It must be a cause and effect essay, and this was the first topic I could think of that I am at least semi-interested in.
