Exactly! I keep using the energy for any decent legendary weapons I get. But I have 194 shards. WTF am I gonna do with that? Nothing. They need to include radiant materials in the reward system. And as another user said, it'd be nice to have some kind of exchange system. Maybe turn them in for Marks.

Go to the strip club and buy a lap dance with ascendant shards, obviously if there were one in Destiny..

I would accept the shards only if it's radiance shards or energy

For some people, getting Ascendant mats as a nightfall reward is slap in the face for their efforts. Because if you have 200-500, that's more than enough to last till whatever comes after comet dlc.
