I took on a herd of those grazing things, I swear I and/or my team mates "died" like 50 times in that 10 minute fight.
Seriously though, the parry mechanic baffles me. I tried hitting square at all sorts of different times and I could never figure out the timing. That and the combat being hectic enough that I'm going to need a lot of practice before I stop fumbling with the controls.
Type-0... I'm trying to figure out how they made a HD PSP game look and play worse than FFX HD on the PS3. I'm going to give it the benefit of doubt and keep at it, but it's not floating my boat at all yet.
I'm feeling a strong urge to go play FF 3, 4 & 5 again... Ah nostalgia.

To parry, you need to wait for the attack to connect; you'll get a prompt during a very brief window of slow motion, and then you can parry.
-
I saw the little icon before the button prompt pops up, but it seems like it didn't always work. I'll work on it some more.

The icon--meaning the glowing claw mark things--indicates an attack that can be parried is coming for you; it's a warning for you to get into your defensive position. You must take the defensive stance, and when the blow hits you you'll get a prompt telling you to push X or square, and if you can push it quick enough you'll parry the attack. Whenever I saw the icon, I used to think it meant the same thing as it does in the Batman Arkham Asylum games, where you just push the counter button and you automatically counter. But there's a bit more thinking and patience that is involved in this game's countering

Yeah, that icon. Thanks for the advice :D
-
You have to wait for the prompt.

Parrying takes practice.
