You receive vanguard reputation (EXP) from completing vanguard bounties. Vanguard marks can only be received after you reach level 18 and are rewarded through playing and completing the daily mission, the ROC strike playlist, and the weekly heroic and nightfall strikes.
Please note that you can only earn 100 vanguard marks and 100 crucible marks each week and hold a maximum of 200 of each at any given time.

Is this a separate statistic tracked somewhere than experience (which contributes to leveling up)? Never mind - I answered my own question...I found Vanguard reputation on my "Advisors tab" and I have 210 / 1500 Vanguard reputation.

Vanguard reputation is a experience of sorts however it does not affect your characters level, yet it does affect what you can buy from the vanguard. vanguard marks are like currency to buy the items you can because of your vanguard rank.
