>Implying WoW, and thus the Fantasy MMORPG genre as a whole, is dead and needs saving >Motherfvking Kickstarter >J. Todd Coleman I've said it before, I'll say it again. It doesn't matter how pretty you make your Kickstarter page, you're still asking us to fund your game with no guarantee that you'll follow through on the promises that you put out. At least if your plans fall out with Publisher money, we're not the ones who dropped $50-$10k to fund you. Using Kickstarter is such risky business, why bother? For every 1 game that's successfully Kickstarted and delivered as advertised, there are hundreds that fail. Who the hell knows where this one will fall? And then there's the fact that this is an MMO. MMORPG's are one of the most crowded and COMPETITIVE genre's you could have chosen. Lasting success for this is almost 0%. I hate to be a negative Nancy, but look at Wildstar. They had a buggy launch and their population, even today, is nothing to write home about. And that -blam!-ing game was hyped almost as much as Destiny.

  • I've only kickstarted one game and never will another. Starbound, I love it and it's good fun but not willing to make another risk with it. Besides I play guild wars 2

  • I do agree with many of your points. I think this game though offers something new without reinventing the wheel. Instances worlds to conquer is not a huge stretch in technology. I think looking at star citizen is a better place for a failed kick starter. People will scream from the high hills wtf, but honestly that whole game is so ambitious and hyped it makes it more likely to disappoint and fail, not saying it's going to because it does look awesome, just a higher chance. I think crowfall will be a niche game which attracts a good foundation of players who will stay for the long hall. I'm excited but I know it will never have more than 3 million, maybe not even a million.

  • Name an MMORPG that's anything special nowadays. This game resorted to kickstarter so they wouldn't need to outsource and have already poured a shit ton of their own money into the game. Since they don't have to outsource they can actually listen to the community (they already are) and continue the game exactly how they want it. Seriously though. Name an MMORPG that is actually anything special and not just "this one looks nicer".

  • Eve Online. A community and economy as complex as an actual nation. Nothing like it exists.

  • There's nothing wholly unique in the fantasy MMORPG genre. It's gotten so polluted that each one ends up borrowing from the other and it all ends up being the same game. Until it comes out and proves otherwise, Crowfall will end up being the same as everything else. That's not to say it won't be fun. WoW isn't unique in any stretch of the imagination, but it is fun for a lot of people. Same goes with every other MMO out there. If it ends up being technically sound, it'll have a population. But to label it an innovator or a game that will bring about a resurrection to a tired genre is premature. How many Devs promise the world? Each and every one of them. How many end up falling flat on their face? Well.... *shrug*

  • My point is they're allowing the community to chime in so they can make what the community wants. If this falls short of your expectations, you weren't being vocal enough. This game isn't going to be released for quite a long time. The community has a lot of time to capitalize and mold it.

  • Actually, Wildstar was quite different compared to other MMO's with an emphasis on skill based aiming and dodging mechanics. It still failed.

  • Guild Wars 2 did the same, and was arguably better at it.

  • All in all it didn't do much else.

  • Even if that was the one thing that's a pretty large change of pace compared to other MMO's.

  • It's nothing groundbreaking.
