The more I play the more I see that beating crota (especially on hard) hangs like 90% on the sword carrier. It really isn't hard to stay alive as a 31. The majority of deaths come from wipes caused by the sword carrier screwing things up or getting too greedy when he hits crota. That or glitches... Or the swordbearer knight being a jerk and running to the farest corner of the map. Nearly all my deaths on crota have been from wipes.

  • So I take it you've never been a sword bearer... Otherwise your opinion probably would be different.

  • That said, it amazes me how I and others can say things like "31 doesn't matter in hard mode, as long as they're a good player," and "my team just beat crota without gjallarhorns" but still people are just like "Nope, level 32 matters more than skill and gjally is more important than being a smart." People like this ruin lfg.

  • In hard mode, the number one reason for a wipe that I've seen is that the sword carrier died, whether from glitches, being greedy or bad decisions. That doesn't necessarily mean they're bad players, but in hard mode, there's a lot that rides on the sword carrier. In normal you can res and recover but hard mode? If you've played it, you know this. Sword carrier dies, it's almost always an automatic wipe.

  • Of course there's more pressure on the sword bearer to perform well, I just don't believe that blaming the only person who isn't standing beyond harm's way for 80% of the boss fight and actually engaging with the boss directly for the entire teams demise. If he or she gets to greedy or doesn't manage the timing right, so be it, but they are not the reason why the team will wipe. If anything the wipe will occur because there is nobody else who is willing to pick up the sword once they are dead because it's just easier to blame the guy who volunteered to do it. (the timing is messed up, I'm not good with it, I have gjallarhorn; just to name a few lowly excuses) I've seen Crota-gone-glitchy raids be repaired in the last second with simple communication and unselfishness, you just have to have a team where more than 1 person is willing to carry the sword. Unfortunately that doesn't happen much.

  • You're right, it is possible to recover, but on hard mode it's really tough because time is so flipping precious. I agree that being sword bearer is way more risky than sitting back and shooting rockets too, but the fact remains, everytime I play hard mode with a 31, I never have problems staying alive. We nearly always just have to wipe for whatever reason.

  • Yeah I'm totally with you when it comes to 31s in the hard raid. It's really not that big of a deal and being lvl 31 shouldn't be a basis for exclusion if you have experience and adequate gear. It's meant to be a challenge of syncing zed teamwork and efficient communication, not just using your RNG blessings to slam everything with max DPS. When I play with my clan, we usually have a few 31s and sometimes 30s along for the ride and baring impossible glitches, everything goes smoothly. And just as a general statement, I'm more annoyed with fire teams rejecting players because they don't have a Gjallarhorn. It's a sign of major cluelessness in my book, any fully leveled rocket launcher (preferably with Tracking) will do the deed if you're not stingy with your ammo. A Gjallarhorn does more damage of course, but if you can't get it done without it, it probably will still be a miserable sh!t show with it.
