If the #2 pencil is so popular, why is it #2?

When pencils were created, they originally had lead in them. The graphite pencil was the second major type of pencil, thus being dubbed "#2". Eventually, the graphite replaced the lead because of its availability and the fact that it doesn't leave as much of a mess on your hands.
