So I've tried to take a deep breath over the news of exotic upgrades yesterday. Still after only 3 months, a hard reset of gear and forced upgrade of exotics is hard to swallow. I say forced because let's be honest, the reason the Vex attack was bumped on Exotic patch day was so you can raid Dark Below ASAP. If you want to be your very best heading into the new raid, don't expect invites if your other exotic weapons aren't maxed.
On to my calculations:
Exotic Weapon or Gear Upgrade path
1) Determine if Xur has your exotic in his list of upgrades for that week
2) Give Xur 1 exotic shard and 7000 glimmer to initiate upgrade of your exotic
3) Buy another exotic shard for 7 strange coins to prepare for re-leveling of your reset exotic
4) Have 7600 glimmer(all bubbles leveled) ready to fully upgrade your reset Weapon exotic
4a) Have 5100 glimmer for Helm / Chest / Gauntlet exotics
5) Have all materials available (relic, spin, spirit, helium) for each bubble
Totals
For weapon exotic - 2 exotic shards(14 strange coins), 14600 glimmer, time and materials
For gear exotic - 2 exotic shards(14 strange coins), 12100 glimmer, time and materials
My totals
15 gear exotics - 30 exotic shards(210 strange coins), 219,000 glimmer, time and materials
15 weapon exotics - 30 exotic shards (210 strange coins), 181,500 glimmer, time and materials
Grand total to upgrade all my exotics
60 exotic shards (420 strange coins), 400,500 glimmer, massive time and materials.
After only 3 months of the games life....
Yea, not sure it's worth it.
Hopefully I have all the figures right. Between the facts in the GI article on costs and the Dev Blog, think that's it.

3 RepliesI'd like to point out that Bungie said they are hoping/expecting people to play this game for the next decade. I don't expect these "roping us back in" strategies to let up, like ever You gotta give it to them though. They know what they're doing

2 RepliesWhat if, instead of upgrading, you bought the new version from him? Save a shard and 7000 glimmer but cost double or more coins?
-
3 RepliesSolutions: -Break down spare exotics for exotic shards - 3 characters weekly heroic 27 strange coins -Glimmer farm Exlusion Zone w/ boost on -Equip your item to turn in bounties -Equip your exotics at end of weeklys -Too lazy to farm materials? Buy bundles You can max you glimmer incredibly easy, coins come by the handful, using telemetrys and equipping exotics during weekly end scenes and using bounties will speed exotic leveling... Can't say I see your problem here, everything is plenty easy to obtain and quick to level. People complain now but it'll be far easier than people act like it will be.

I'm keeping my Exotic the same except for Thorn. I have about 17,000 kills with this one gun, and I power leveled a character to 28 in about 4 hours. It shouldn't be too difficult to max Thorn again.
-
2 RepliesYeah but you don't use ALL of your exotics ... I only use patience and time in nightfall, the last word every once in a while, haven't touched truth .... I probably only need like 4-6 exotics leveled if that. A lot of legendary gear isn't worth replacing (fate bringer) in or so I can't use my Ghorn.

They shield at the very least increase the glimmer cap.
-
What else are you going to do? Use glimmer on? I'm not being a dick bro but it's not that bad. Leveling up weapons are easy and more damage in the end. Well that's my 2 cents cheers ace
-
1 ReplyDidn't the article say it would be easier in terms of resources and time to upgrade? I haven't seen the upgrade tree for anything posted other than the picture that showed Thorn with no upgrades at 302 attack
-
5 RepliesI will only be upgrading the weapons I use most in pve and a TLW (for the Trials of Osiris). In the Crucible weapons are normalized for damage. Most of my exotics only see action in there as Icebreaker or Mythoclast occupy my exotic spot in pve. Why go through the trouble of upgrading a weapon just to re-level the item to obtain the perks you already have when the damage rating will not affect TTK? Just leave the bulk of them maxed and optimal for crucible while only upgrading weapons you plan to use for pve.

2 RepliesOne step back. Two steps forward. It's not the end of the world.
-
That Glimmer count though
-
U can still get exotic from nightfalls and random drops which will be the newer better version so u dont have to reset ur old maxed out exotic if u get that same exotic in nightfall or raid
-
I got 20 exotic shards. I'm ready for whateva
-
7 RepliesBump. Start farming glimmer. Currency isn't just straight glimmer, remember you can vault glimmer. >>> Riddler exits >>>
-
Have you ever gotten an exotic you already had? I have, most have, that said you won't have to upgrade all of them. After the explosion the upgraded versions will be sold and dropped. Ill upgrade 1 or 2 weapons and 2 or 3 of my most used exotic armors. The rest will maybe get updated but more likely just replaced by new drops.

2 RepliesEdited by Exu: 12/6/2014 2:43:29 AMIf Xur is indeed going to be selling the upgraded versions of exotics from next week, as well as them being made drops, I'd rather just buy the upgraded versions and save myself an exotic shard (or two!) and 7k Glimmer. I do think that if they must go with this system then if you've already spent an exotic shard on the final node of an exotic then you shouldn't be asked to spend another. It shouldn't be two or three, it should be two.

1 Replyyea i think the only thing i will upgrade is my armor for more defense/light level. attack values only come into play when your going against enemies that are higher level then you. tested this out with my friend who had a 300 attack suros and a 274 attack suros. both did the same damage on a level 28 dreg (him being level 29). the only difference we noticed was when he dropped his light level to 26 and shot the dreg. the 300 attack did more damage.
-
You only need two exotic shards to upgrade and fully level. The exotic does not have to be fully leveled before you upgrade it.
-
what the hell else will you do stacking up all those exotic shards, glimmer and mats.............save up for your guardians early retirement on a lake view cottage near the cosmodrome? Not me I fight till I die!!! panzy.
-
2 RepliesI interpreted the exotics are requiring 3 exotic shards to upgrade, not 2. 1 for trade in, 1 for the exotic upgrade node that already exists, and 1 for the node that will be added. Did I misinterpret things? Not that it really matters in the end.
-
Well think about it, these things mostly only apply to the raid, there are only gonna be a few weapons that you will want to upgrade and there will be ones useless to upgrade. Such as the last word, which is primarily a pvp gun, the only way you would max it would be for the return of iron banner. And some guns you won't even use, you are exaggerating how many things you will upgrade. You aren't FORCED to upgrade a thing if you don't want to.
-
And by that time the next DLC/expansion will be here or close, so do it all over again in 3 more months. Or, wait until then and see what can/will be allowed to move on. If people do this now, and in 3 months the next expansion comes out and they say that nothing can be brough over from the original content, only the 1st expansion items and they do the same upgrade system, then it would be a waste of time.

5 RepliesLmao @ dont expect invites. I love the new updates .
