As Sony Online Entertainment prepares to bring Planetside 2 from PC to PlayStation 4, president John Smedley has some ambitious goals for the online shooter -- namely, his team aims to attract an Xbox audience. “We believe that Planetside 2 is going to be the massively multiplayer Halo for PlayStation 4," Smedley told IGN. "So we want to bring a completely new kind of gameplay to a completely new audience.”
As a Halo fan myself, I'll have to agree with Sony on this one. I've played PS2 on the PC already (honestly, who hasn't now a days?) and there's a few things that make this game awesome and important:
1) It's free to play, with little to no BS
2) It's an MMO
3) It's an FPS
4) It's an FPSMMO done the right way. Feels like a QUALITY FPS game with the feel of a QUALITY MMO.
EDIT: Some of you guys are taking what Sony said WHAT TOO LITERALLY. They're NOT trying to make a Halo clone (nor did they). What Sony is saying is that PS2 will copy the success of Halo, but in an FPSMMO format. PS2 is a pretty solid game, from both the FPS aspect and the MMO aspect.
Will Sony actually be able to do this? I dunno, we'll just have to wait and see.

Edited by Axdinosaurx: 11/13/2013 3:08:14 AMEh, I don't know about comparing it to Halo. Halo is small scale fast arena fights not 2000 player battles across a continent. Though I don't see a F2P *shooter* becoming a multi-billion dollar franchise. Anyways PS2 is a blast if you get a bunch of friends to play with.

2 RepliesEdited by BSS Lazer: 11/13/2013 12:36:13 AM"Little to no BS". I call BS. You ever played with a crappy team and been zerged by tanks and ships? HAVE YOU?! *breaks down sobbing* Otherwise it is a brilliant game, the sniping is fun. If you have a team that communicates well everyone else is screwed. I hope they dont keep all the real money purchase guns though.

I like PS2, but it tends to be a mess in gameplay. I'd much rather take a prettier, more polished, 64 player multiplayer FPS any day of the week.
-
I can definitely see it attracting a large playerbase. It's quite popular on PC, and there's no reason why that popularity shouldn't carry over to console.
-
Sounds fun until Destiny :)
-
2 RepliesNo it isn't. PS2 blows. Free is too much IMO.
-
3 RepliesPS2 easily kills halo 4. In multiplayer terms obviously. There each different in there way so comparing them will be a bit edgy but have you seen PS2 gameplay? Looks killer.
-
2 RepliesI wish PS2 would add some variety though in this game.. I'd like a gametype where each faction fights off an Alien invader on each continent by themselves.
-
2 RepliesI really need to try this game out.

Calling it Halo at this point might be an insult to themselves. Unless they are predicting a drastic drop in population after a week or two...

1 ReplyEdited by Firedune: 11/13/2013 12:54:30 AMHonestly, this is one of the few games that i'm VERY excited for, not to mention very fond of already. I'll admit it, the game had a pretty rough start but the devs are doing right, with each patch actually fixing the game, with the latest optimization patch the game is running a a buttery-smooth 60 fps@high settings on a medium-end rig (very similar to a ps4) while visuals are even tighter than before. They are also hands-down one of the most transparent devs around and genuinely care about the game, and frequently play it (though mostly on the test server) to make sure they have an idea of what's going on. I'd just like to say that this truly is a NEXT-GEN title, and provides an experience like no other. You may think that battlefield's 64-player per match is a big deal, but you've never been in a fight with that many people on your team fighting for control of a base while another 64 try and capture it while a third team comes around just to mess with you. Between the armor columns, infantry zergs, and combined forces ops, there's never a dull moment and i've actually been in awe at the game several times during some of the fights, something no other game can pull off. Planetside 2 actually has the potential to be the PS4's next Halo if it can sustain a population balance, which not requiring a ps+ subscription will bring a lot of people already and is definitely a triple-A title able to compete with, and certainly outlast the big boys. There are really only 2 concerns about the game- When the proper gameplay formula is settled (they're almost there!), and the fact that, compared to other shooters at least, there is undeniably a generous learning curve for the basics (where to find a fight, what to do to capture a base and how to use the UI) which does turn off many people apparently. With enough experience though you start to memorize terrain and weapon patterns just like in halo, not to mention that the kill times are fairly generous (AKA fair), all the weapons are balanced (aside from a few tweaks), and vehicle combat is a blast. The game is also by no means a game where you can get the full experience alone, really. It just may be the most teamwork-oriented game i've played and ever since joining an outfit (clans basically) i've had some great times and have made some life-long friends. Planetside 2 is definitely high on my ps4 wishlist and there's no reason why no one shouldn't join an outfit and give it a week. 10/10 would play again.

2 RepliesThe difference being Halo was/is good (a debate for another time) and Planetside 2 is meh.
-
Lol Watch Halo come out with it´s own MMOFPS and -blam!- the shit out of PS2 in this regard.
-
Sure, I could see it happen.
-
3 RepliesDo you have to buy guns with real money?
-
1 ReplyBut will it be like Halo 3?
-
I don't see why PS2 is going to attract a Halo audience. The only thing they really have in common is the Sci-Fi setting.
-
3 RepliesI've played it on pc and no just no.
-
4 RepliesI've heard it was good. There's no way I could run it though. I heard some people have trouble running it on good PCs. No clue how Sony plans to get this to be equal to the PC version maxed out... Anyways. I've heard a lot of people prefer PS1, or at least, certain aspects of it. Have you played PS1? If so, do you agree?
