There's some pretty big contradictions in Destiny for how death and resurrection with the Ghosts actually works.
Shin Malphur, the second owner of the last word was not born a Guardian. He was born a regular person but was given the light by, I believe, Jaren Ward ghost. So you don't need to be born a guardian to get the light.
But at the beginning of Destiny our ghost finds us specifically and seems to be unable to revive anyone else as at the time Ghosts seemed to be specifically tied to individual Guardians.
However, by the time we do the Cayde' stash mission in the Taken King the Ghost drops a bomb shell on this. He says he tried to revive an exceptionally powerful guardian that was stuck in stasis at the top of the ship, but he preferred to sleep. This was clearly a reference to the Master Chief from Halo, but that doesn't matter. Its in the game, it is canon.
Since this clearly throws out the idea that ghosts are tied to individual guardians and that ghosts who have lost their guardians can give the others the abilities of the light, why can't we just find a ghost that lost his Guardian in the Red War, or just have our own ghost revive him himself?
Edit: a lot of people are focusing on on the "Easter egg". As far as I know it was never confirmed to just be a reference to the Master Chief. It doesn't day 117 or John on the pod. It just says the person thought the previous war was enough. But guardians don't remember their past lives anyways so that by itself is questionable. But the character exists, and it is accessible via normal gameplay and it isn't hidden. Our ghost literally tracks it in game. Its canon, more concretely canon than any of the grimoire by themselves with no in game verification.
I'd also like the clarify that I don't care that Cayde is dead. He's a boring 1 dimensional character in game just like everyone else. His death means about as much to me as the speakers, but he's the first main character to die while the light is still around and there' a lot of problems with guardian deaths in general.

The easiest way to explain it is that Bunglevision hired grade school writers.

1 ReplyEdited by GRAYFOX-SVT: 8/19/2018 11:49:30 PMWhen your ghost is killed you can no longer be brought back to life. Uldren knows this that's why he shot his ghost first then put one between Cayde's eyes. Eveything is about the Ghost being able to bring guardians back that is why during the main story when we are trying to make it to the farm our ghost tells us to be careful b/c he would not be able to bring us back with no light in him or us.

The sleeping guardian isn’t dead he’s in stasis. He doesn’t have a ghost but he doesn’t want a new one either. Think of the dead guardian on the moon in D1. He lost his light and died. So my guess is that while light can be given via Ghost, you can only be revived as a guardian once. Because if it was that easy to bring back a dead guardian we would’ve just revived any guardian who died. Like those dead guardians in the second campaign mission of D2.

14 RepliesHe's dead and his son Ace (might be the stranger as well?) is carrying him. or Cayde dies, Ace is born. He's "funny" enough to give his next life a different name.
-
Technically his brain is shot and his ghost was destroyed
-
Bang. Dead. The end.
-
3 RepliesHe's an Exo so can't you just scavenge some of Cayde's data and put it into another body anyways? He just gets shot it's not like his entire body is destroyed

4 RepliesMy biggest question about the trailer: Why does Cayde's ghost just float there to the side doing NOTHING during battle while Cayde is about spent? Like hide in his cloak and start repairing him or something!!!

2 RepliesSo, Cayde is going to die his final death because there is no light deep within that prison. Similar to how when we enter a darkness zone in a stike, we cannot be revived. He also cannot be revived because his ghost got destroyed, and only a guardians personal ghost can revive them. There are certain characteristics and the presence of light that makes someone a guardian. Ghosts cant go around reviving every dead human they find, they have to be special and posses the light. but Shin's case gets confusing. He possessed the light but Jaren took him under his wing and trained him to be like a guardian. By the time Jaren died, Shins light was just as strong and tuned like his mentors, possibly the reason as to why Jaren's ghost was able to bond with Shin Your right about the pod situation. Its in the game therefor its cannon. But our ghost wasn't compatible with him, i imagine someday the right ghost would be able to resurrect that guardian. I think the important thing to note is that once a guardian dies somewhere were there is no light they are gone no matter what. Some examples of this are Jaren Ward when his light was snuffed out by thorn, Eris Morns Fireteam dying in the hellmouth, or Wei Ning being stabbed by Crota. Even if cayde's ghost was still around he could no longer be revived because his light had faded away

He will be back in D3

2 RepliesCayde was killed off to deal with the fact that Nathan Fillion is unavailable to voice Cayde. Now those who assume that he's PERMANENTLY dead are missing a few key points. 1. The rule that "You die your final death after you're Ghost is destroyed" only applied to a world with a DORMANT Traveller. The Traveller is AWAKE now. 2. The Traveller is making new Guardians. If you go over by Shaxx in the Tower he's constantly ranting and raving about "rookies' who "don't know the basics" and "need more training" before being sent to the 'front lines". He's clearly talking about NEW Guardians that have been resurrected since the awakening of The Traveller and the end of The Red War. 3. So there is a VERY real possibility that an awake Traveller could Resurrect Cayde (again) in the future (once Fillion is available again).

Best explanation: How does a Guardian truly die? When their one source of resurrection dies with them. And it just so happens to be the case here. His Ghost was destroyed, so there’s no way he could come back.
-
3 RepliesHe just needs new batteries, then he’ll be good as new.

Has anyone brought up the possibility that we do try to bring Cayde back, or get to him before he dies. And he tells our Guardian to just let him die.

12 RepliesThe model known as Cayde-6 is dead. All EXOs have numbers next to their names for how many times they’ve been resurrected. Cayde-6 is dead. Long live the new Cayde-7

3 RepliesIsn’t Nolan North voicing Cayde in the Forsaken? Just my opinion, but don’t you think Caydes death might be a bit of a carrot to get you to buy the expansion - then Cayde gets resurrected by space magic later on? 🧖♂️🌌🧙🏼♂️

5 RepliesA bullet penetrated his brain and that caused his bodily functions to no longer work.
-
If that's the case, you might as well ask how Guardians permanently die at all.

He was born with the light.
But at the beginning of Destiny our ghost finds us specifically and seems to be unable to revive anyone else as at the time Ghosts seemed to be specifically tied to individual Guardians.
While it isn't directly stated, it's heavily implied that our ghost was created specifically to find us. Edit: I have been told there is a grimoire card that says our ghost is in fact connected to us.
Since this clearly throws out the idea that ghosts are tied to individual guardians and that ghosts who have lost their guardians can give the others the abilities of the light, why can't we just find a ghost that lost his Guardian in the Red War, or just have our own ghost revive him himself?
Ghosts can't give the light to people who don't already have it, they can only amplify the light in people who already possess it (up to a certain limit of course). It's possible ghosts are only tied to their guardians as long as they're alive, thus not being able resurrect more than one guardian at a time. Having another ghost who lost their guardian during the Red War is a good solution, but it's possible there are none due to the fact that the Cabal know that ghosts are the ones who resurrect guardians and probably shot as many ghosts as they could find.

1 ReplyCayde-6 lost his light during the Red War, didn't decide to risk his life in an easy mission to get it back, he payed the price in Forsaken. Bungie wants to make it that simple but Bungie doesn't know Grimoire apparently
-
1 ReplyHe will just be cayde-7. That is all
-
3 RepliesMust have been in a darkness zone

18 RepliesThat doesn’t mean that Master Chief is canon, or explain how Cayde is dead. From the E3 reveal trailer, it’s made pretty clear. His ghost was destroyed in the fight with the barons, and our Ghosts are required to heal or revive us. People tend to take that for granted. Without a ghost, no guardian can really come back.

3 RepliesHe's dead bungie already got everything mapped out if they removing his voice from all the strikes and stuff he's not coming back.😅

1 ReplyCayde isn't dead. It's a simulation that was ran if we went in blindly and the result was Cayde falling for a trap and getting killed. He's alive and well
