Do people not understand the concept of a sequel?

It's simple really: Sequels are made to improve, develop, and expand an already existing world. Don't go around and say, "BUT EXPANSIONS DO THAT RRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" No, expansion only do one thing: EXPAND. Sequels are the things that expand, improve, and develop. What do you think a game like Titanfall 2 or Mass Effect: Andromeda is? Assassins Creed, CoD, Basically every franchise created! They are sequels. They reuse some old items and/or places. Did anyone start calling them expansions? NO! Of course some places will be seen again! Of course we will see familiar faces! Of course certain elements like sounds and visuals will be brought back! What did you expect!? Not to mention, it was just revealed today! The only real thing we even saw was the half of the FIRST MISSION! If you want a new experience, go play a new game! If you can't handle the fact that sequels do theses kinds of things all the time, then you are out of your mind!

  • It's weird that people were expecting it to be so vastly different that we wouldn't even recognise it. I don't get people these days. Don't change enough and it's copy pasta, change too much and they whine because it's not the same. You can't win.

  • No, sir! You are wrong! That's what made me so angry when I seen Guardians of the Galaxy 2! It was the same guardians as the last movie! Arrgghh! I wanted NEW guardians and a NEW galaxy! But no! Just the same! The whole thing was a reskin movie!

            • Ye sequels are where they make a dlc for a game, then chuck a number on the end of the title! Well in destiny's case it is.

            • Destiny 2 has blatant problems but i'm going to get it because I like destiny. To all you guys saying how it's going to get better or bungie will fix it, you're dead wrong. The same shit that's happening now is mirroring the original destiny launch. Cool things are shown, people get hyped, bad things are shown, people get mad, people get mad at people getting mad, etc. It's the same old same old. They already shown that they are keeping the same formula with how similar it is and the fact that they already have 2 confirmed dlc proves this further. Eventually ya'll going to be complaining about a bunch of shit, that us year 1 players did in the beggining. No dedicated server, little customization, one class is to op/underpowered, exotics are broken/boring, strikes and enemies are repetative etc. Let people criticize. Nothing is wrong with it. Bungie has proven that they only really listen when voices are loud enough.

              • I'm going full Murtaugh with all these posts on the b.net forums lately. I'm genuinely curious as to what franchises or series or whatever haven't been similar from original game through sequels. Everyone fellates Zelda but at least a couple of them shits, especially early on, are pretty much the same in terms of mechanics and "action". It only gets more formulaic from there: Mario Bros Mega Man Doom Madden Borderlands Grand Theft Auto (from 3 on anyway) Earthworm Jim Banjo-Kazooie Uncharted Etc etc etc. Being shocked that Destiny 2 looks like more destiny is disingenuous at best. But if you're all set to be mad, go for it. Life's too short to get angry over video games.

                • I understand that. But what was improved? Ingame LFG? That should have been there from the beginning. This isn't new, it's just Bungie finally doing what they should have done a long time ago, and putting it in their game. The strikes and story missions are still incredibly formulaic, to the point where I was able to predict exactly what was going to happen. There still isn't a fully open world, otherwise you would see YouTuber's taking different routes to get to the strike boss. The "new" content is the same content we've been getting just slightly modified, NOT improved. I can tell you that the game will still face the same content drought problems as its predecessor did, because of one simple thing. Bungie still does not understand what Destiny is. It's a shooter, yes. But at the end of the day, this game draws aspects from traditional RPGs and MMOs, and in those games, ENDGAME should be the number one priority. We as avid Destiny players spend most of our time at maximum or near maximum levels. What happens when you finish the story? The strikes? The raid? The exact same thing that's BEEN happening. We log onto the forums to complain that there isn't enough content. And that leaves the one thing that has kept this franchise alive through all those content droughts. The Crucible. The crazy, hectic, lightshow that is Destiny's PvP. Or rather, WAS Destiny's PvP. Because apparently, Bungie is absolutely smitten with the idea of recreating Halo in Destiny's sandbox. It takes away from what makes the PvP experience unique. It waters it down, and for me personally, makes it less fun. I could not care less, if the game looked the same. If it sounded the same. If we revisited the same locations. Met the same characters. Those aren't the reasons I see it as an expansion. I wanted Destiny 2 to be a new start. A new beginning. A game where Bungie fully embraced what Destiny is. A hybrid. An incredibly unique, and rich experience, with so much potential. I WANT this game, this franchise to succeed. I want them to carry this game forward in leaps and bounds, but all I've seen are baby steps. Tiny, itty bitty little baby steps. That's why I see this new game as an expansion. It simply took the major, most apparent flaws of Destiny, and fixed them. It did not take the aspects that make Destiny fun and expand on them, it did not improve them, it did not surprise me, it did not amaze me. It did not address the root of Destiny's issues. That's why I'm disappointed. Why I'm let down. Why I went ahead and typed up this entire post for you. You're free to disagree. In fact, I'd love it if someone could change my mind. Rekindle my love for Destiny and all the potential I saw in it. But I don't see that potential in Destiny 2. Not now anyways. Have fun in Destiny 2 guys. I won't be joining you. Not this time.

Nope. Sequel means everything should be different. Shouldn't even be called Destiny. New races. New subclasses. New areas. Nothing from previous game.... Except for my grimoire, my weapons, my armor, all my emblems and shaders and emotes, and everything else in my vault. Yeah. That's what a sequel is supposed to be. -BNet forums.

I honestly can't tell any major difference between 30 FPS and 60 FPS as for the servers, I don't really care about PvP, so I could care less.

                      • I love these people they're the greatest. Whiny kid: it feels and looks the same theres no difference how can this be called a new game? My reply: ARE YOU SERIOUS, lets look at cod, same gameplay different guns different maps yet people still spend millions on that buying season pass, supply crates, now lets look at fifa, all the have to do is copy and paste and once again people still religiously buy that and spend money on coins and packs. Whiny kid: .....I feel dumb.

                          • But bungie has already released expansions that not only expanded but improved and developed the game. Like when they added sidearms and all the gun reworkes they've done. So those were all sequels?

                            • People are making these assumptions because it's really not that different from normal destiny at all from what we've seen. There's a normal destiny strike, a new raid, a few new weapons, a larger world, and clan integration- but I still feel let down. Where's the trading system, where's personal housing, where's the pets, where's the class customization, where's the space battles, where's dedicated servers, where's the stuff that people have been asking for since year 1? (Note, those are just examples of possible features that the community have suggested). To me the fact that they are lacking so many features that the community has been begging for makes this seem more like a DLC then a real new game. I haven't seen anything particularly NEW. Nothing really stands out to me as being a new feature in the game. It's just more of the same old thing that we've gotten from each DLC, just this time it's going to be bigger. Some people may be completely fine with this, but I personally, and the friends I introduced to this game, are not. Anyways, to each their own I guess.

                              •
Sorry for the long post, but here are my thoughts on this subject. To me, a sequel does not need to be innovative to be a sequel, but innovation defines the best sequels. For example, take Halo CE and Halo 2. Halo 2 saw graphics improvements, new locations (Earth, High Charity. Etc), new weapons, features, and enemies. It also had a reimagined HUD. To me, with these qualities, Halo 2 is already a valid sequel. However, what made Halo 2 truly great was the accessible, yet competitive, multiplayer and new campaign perspectives (with the Arbiter). This is where innovation comes in. A valid sequel does not require much innovation to set it apart from simply being an expansion. However, innovation is what makes a sequel great and memorable. So, to apply this to Destiny and Destiny 2, from what we saw at the reveal, Destiny 2 has new weapons and weapon types, new story locations, new features and activities (lost sectors, class abilities, etc), and a slightly retooled HUD. Therefore, in my opinion, Destiny 2 seems to feel like a sequel and not an expansion. The problem with Destiny 2 is, like you said, nothing is innovative or completely new. We have already seen modes like countdown in other games. The story certainly seems better than the void of vanilla Destiny, but it doesn't appear to have anything over the campaigns of Titanfall 2, for example. Heck, our guardian still appears to be mute! In conclusion, do I think Destiny 2 is a valid sequel? Yes. Do I think that it will be an amazing sequel? Maybe, but Bungie will have to step it up in future presentations.
• Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are very similar because new Vegas was designed as a dlc but was too big. Fan still argue about which was better.
