Hand Cannon Phantom Bullets

Hey community, just wanted to get your opinion on this as well. I am a hand cannon user and have loved them from the beginning but nothing drives me more nuts than hand cannon phantom bullets. If you use a hand cannon then you know what I mean. You land that perfect first shot and then either your second, third or fourth shot just plan misses even though your gun is aimed straight at his head or chest. I feel like hand cannons are close but I really feel like this need to be addressed. I forget Bungie's exact wording but it's something to the extent of taking your time with each shot. I'm sorry but that's not possible when you have people running around with guns like DoP that can mow you down almost immediately. With a hand cannon I don't have time to steady each shot to ensure it hits in these instances. I don't mind losing a gun fight but it drives me nuts when I lose a fight that I clearly would have won had that last bullet registered. What do you guys think?

  • I refuse to use them in Pvp until their accuracy is buffed to year 1 status. The range is fine and will offset them becoming OP.

      • Either scouts and pulse need phantom bullets or hand cannons need them removed, I personally greatly prefer the second option

As an avid hand cannon user myself, I find this whole "phantom bullet" craze a bit interesting. I've used every hand cannon available accept for The Devil You Know, so I feel like my experience is up to par enough to have some valid input. The main tidbit I want to throw in is about how range affects these phantom bullets. Range is your single most important stat on a hand cannon. (Reload perks are nice, but require you to get a kill first. Sometimes that's easier said than done.) The lower your range, the smaller the distance for damage drop off . This we already know. But one thing a lot of people leave out is range also impacts your aim assist. With this info out of the way, we can look at hand cannons a bit differently than any other weapon archetype. HCs are meant for mid-close to close range encounters. Without the proper range setup, you pretty much forcing yourself into painful closer range engagements. Take my Lord High Fixer (with hot swap, rifled barrel, and life army of one FYI). I'm not the best with numbers but this build has more range than The First Curse before activating it's namesake perk. So it's pretty decent! I have 0 trouble landing shots from just outside mid range encounters thanks to the added range. The stability isn't great, but that's where you spend time with a weapon to really get to know it. Now take my vendor rolled The Vanity, the FWC hand cannon. With 3rd eye (meh, that's better for scout rifles), rifled barrel, and life support. Also, the stability for this weapon is the highest base stability of all available hand cannons. With The Vanity, my range is about 5% less than my Lord High Fixer. But my stability is massive, so landing shots should be fairly easy right? Nope! I have to actually take my time at anything outside mid-close range despite being really stable and having decent range. Lord High Fixer lands shots more consistently due to its increased range, despite its stability being a little unruly. My argument against phantom bullets is to have a range build hand cannon. This doesn't make a HC godly, it just makes it more viable. Personally, I don't think using a hand cannon as a primary is a great idea. I've been pairing my Vanity with Plan C and Zen Meteor lately and I find myself enjoying it as more of a back up in case I don't secure the immediate kill with a special weapon. This prevents me from encountering phantom bullets a bit more by allowing me to have a very versatile play style. Hand Cannons are in a great spot. It just takes a bit of skill and understanding to be a true Space Cowboy.

                • In the last "sweaty" tournament, the only weapons being used were legendary HCs. Understand that if HCs were 100% consistent, a good shooter will with 99% of close and mid range engagements against any other weapon type. Which is slightly unbalanced. The phantom bullets reward patience and good aim, not spamming the trigger.

It is probably because hand canons has the smallest muzzle velocity, unlike sidearms.

                      • I've had better success with Ace of Spades than anything else in a very long time, including Hawkmoon. I haven't bothered to look at the math behind it, all I know is it works for me. I don't play any small map without it.

Bungies answer to people using hand cannons was to add dispersion, while at the same time, shrinking hitboxes, and adding damage falloff. All that was needed was an increase to damage falloff at range. Now, we basically can call "luck in the chamber": One random bullet in the magazine has a chance to hit where you are aiming, and all handcannons now have this perk.

                          • And that's why this game is dumb. Range determines if you hit someone as well as how much damage it does when really it should only determine how much damage it does because if you are accurate you should hit the target, but that's not how it works in this game

                            • So I done a little testing and I know there are a lot of factors that can be added. Basically though if you adjust your thumb pressure for the recoil all your shots are in a small hit box. Body shots anyway. Precision shots need to be a little slower, but that's where aim assist should help. Maybe. Also I realized I was aiming low but I didn't feel like doing it again. Also I'm not as good with these HC as I would like to be. The Last Word: https://youtu.be/JrSrtxFRa98 I thought with bloom I would see one or two bullets way left, right or over their head. They stayed in a tight group. So where are these bullets going? The First Curse: https://youtu.be/f-smuT94o_Q A little better the second time. In Game: https://youtu.be/nvxj5erv5GM [spoiler] I do realize I probably missed those shots, but a melee and team mates grenade= no damage. 😓 LOL [spoiler] Improve hit detection all around. Guns, melee, grenades, etc.

                              • If you're using Hawkmoon, I'd recommend just firing it slower. I take it slow and steady with Hawkmoon and rarely do I get any phantom bullets.

                                • They definitely need some changing. Bullets should go where you're aiming and not fly off in random directions. As a side not, can we spawn with more ammo for hand cannons? They're the only primary in the game that I've run out of ammo with. It's kind of silly.
