Update ~2/3rds of players in this poll believe HoW had the best progression system. I belive it shows player preference for horizontal progression rather than beating our heads against a wall trying to progress vertically.
Launch Destiny
Pros: Old light system was at least streamlined. Progression was story to get to 20 strikes to get to 26-27 then VoG to 30. Iron Banner and Queens Wrath helped fill that awkward gap between 23ish and 27.
Cons: "forever 29" in vault. No armor diversity because light was 100% tied to armor. Not to mention running in circles for mats. Dear god.
Dark Below
Pros: Drop rate in Crota's End significantly improved compared to vault. So 32 was possible. I believe iron banner rerolling was added during this time so that was nice. Buying mats I believe was added during vanilla but I'll add it here.
Cons: Vendor armor immediately made the grind to 30 in VoG irrelevant as it came at 31 light. First replacement of content as VoG pretty much fell to the wayside as the armor didn't do anything to progress you and the weapons were still great but a little bit weaker than DB weapons. Still no armor diversity as 32 was dependant on raid gear.
I nearly forgot about that horrible exotic upgrade system dear god. Where you had to rebuy your exotics from xur and then relevel them because screw you.
Towards the end iron banner gear did drop at max light which was cool.
House of Wolves
Pros: Absolute freedom over the gear you want to use. Rerolling gave you real agency over the grasp of rng. As long as you got etheric light every activity was relevant. Progression became more horizontal as 34 was easy to achieve but nailing down the exact perks and stats you wanted was more difficult. PVP became a legitimate way to progress with the addition of Trials and it rewarded great weapons with functionality in both pve and pvp.
Cons: Near instant 34 put you in an instant "what now" mindset. Rerolling became a problem when there was only a handful of good perks in a sea of garbage perks. Bad prison weapons meant that prison was only used as an etheric light farm.
Also you probably deleted a ton of good stuff in dark below because you thought it wouldn't be coming forward. Suprise!
Taken King
Pros: honestly I'm biased against TTK so I'm going to need some help here.
I honestly like the gunsmith system as an inbetween between rerolling and no rerolling. I just wish it was expanded.
Cool strike playlist and crucible playlist gear.
Infusion is a nice idea on paper.
Cons:
Your cape now partially determines your power for some reason. New stat rocks with useless perks added for no reason but to tank your light for a while.
"Yo dawg so I heard you liked rng so I put rng light level on your rng drop with rng perks so you can rage while you rage while you rage"
Trials really lost that progression aspect.
Lower drop rates for crucible playlist/strike gear than in House of Wolves. Which makes no sense because rerolling made drops irrelevant in HoW but now they're nowhere to be seen.
Infusion averages your light level just to annoy you and force you to make the decision of "I have all these bad 315+ weapons but if I infuse them into what I want to use then my light will decrease"
Oh and every activity from year one except for the strikes that were allowed to come back were made irrelevant to progression. And all weapons/armor from year one can't come forward in any meaningful way so we're currently at a game that is a third of the size that it could be.
Which one do you think is better? What would you like to see differently in progression? I'm personally writing up a mashup system between HoW and TTK I would like to see.

How Era with reduced e-light drops from trials would be the best of both worlds. attainable max level gear that you want to keep vs too much grinding for a couple points of light on a ghost/class item.

Where's the division

2 RepliesEdited by Percivle: 3/1/2016 10:31:53 AMIf by progression you mean scaling of the light levels, then TTK is the best. I could do without the class items affecting light level but whatevs.
Whatever they do next, they should add ascension of rare (blue) gear.
15 RepliesThis just shows how crap this community really is and just wants everything handed to them. TTK is clearly the best with its slow progression and infusing making every drop useful. HoW took 6hours to reach max light and had every gun I wanted at max light within two weeks.

somewhere in between house of wolves and the taken king. how was too easy, and ttk is too grindy.

Really enjoyed HoW leveling

Edited by aKrazyDutchman: 3/2/2016 6:11:38 AMIn the older expansions the damage you did and took one level below level cap was MASSIVE. that's why so many raid groups required gjallarhorn because it was the best way to offset the damage reduction. In taken king yeah it's harder to get max level but it really doesn't make that big of a gameplay difference. You're literally getting max level just so you can say "i got max level"

House of Wolves was undoubtably the pinnacle of this game. Taken King was a major letdown in my book. Half of the game became irrelevant only 3 months after they made older content relevant again. That was their worst move by far. The loss of elemental primaries and the introduction of double-RNG come in at a close second & third. Just look at how much things have changed since May 19, 2015. The community's view of Bungie was favorable and people were having fun. When Taken King was announced everyone rushed to preorder. In only 10 months, some of the things that made this game great were taken away, new things that no one asked for were added to lengthen the grind, and Bungie has fallen completely out of favor with a majority of the gaming world, let alone their own community.

Can they remove infusion requiring weapon parts? That's definitely why we've run out

Edited by TheW1ngedHussar: 3/2/2016 12:57:58 AMHoW actually allowed you to wear anything you wanted to wear and use any weapon you wanted to use. I hope someday Bungie will give Etheric light a better purpose than queen rep.

House of Wolves was the best. You could literally have your favorite weapons and armor at Max level and have your ideal god roll on anything if you had the resources for it. Infusion in TTK is a joke and just add an unnecessary amount of RNG to a flawed system.

1 ReplyI voted TtK. I think infusion is a good idea overall, but could be implemented better. I love the higher light value...319 is 1000x better than 29 was. I never liked the idea of rerolling, I much prefer the gunsmith and grinding for perfect rolls. 3oC are a cool idea, but I think they need to work a little differently...maybe a bit lower drop rate or something. Raid weapons need to be worth getting, rather than just infusion fodder.

Long live the wolves

1 ReplyAlthough HoW had the most opportunity for diversity, how often did you see the fatebringer, black hammer, Gjallahorn combo? Don't forget that thorn and the last word were in their prime and no other weapons were a viable choice.
-
2 RepliesSee? This is why we need to nerf fusion rifles

Edited by Homeless Taniks: 3/1/2016 6:30:06 PMPeople that pick HoW don't realize it was a end of the year 1 dlc that allowed you to reach max rank in under 2 hours. It also made the previous months pointless. A player that didn't play before HoW could be max rank in a day. Sure we could ascend all gear but it also made previous playtime irrelevant. I think this will be how the handle the end of every year. Current system is the only one that's built for long term progression. Each previous was very limited in progression. 2 light levels per dlc? Yay

Dank kush?

4 RepliesInfusion would be better if rewards weren't shit. But infusion is the best progressing system it's just bungies "rng" makes it suck.
-
2 RepliesI like TTK system....however, they need to give a more consistent way to level up. Certain items...Ghost and Class items are very difficult if not impossible to get 320 versions of, you basically have to be real lucky. SRL was a good move, I don't know why it hasn't become a monthly event like IB....and as far as IB goes, the drop rate is horrendous. I make rank 5 on all 3 characters every event and I have never gotten a ghost over 310...I have never gotten anything over 317. The raid challenge was good, at least you had a chance each week at getting that elusive 320 item, maybe have it rotate so all items have a chance to drop. Boots one week then 3 weeks later a Ghost or something.
-
i dont know anything other than TTK and HoW. but i def would say that HoW seemed more straightforward
-
Infusion is a great system, but could have better light level conversions... 280 infused up to 320 is just too many steps. Maybe anything up to 15 difference gets you a perfect conv. 280> 295> 310> 320. Also as you near the cap drops should be spread more evenly above and below you like they are for the way up. Ie when your at 280 if about 25% of drops are above you. When at 319 25% of drops should be 320.

2 RepliesMan you bought back some scary memories of year 1, waiting for that helmet drop in VoG (got 30 maybe 2 weeks before TDB dropped), Grinding mats my god.. And I had forgotten completely about re-leveling exotics. That was a kick in the nuts. Etheric light and HoW was great. Atleast it puts in to perspective how much better the game is today. Us Year 1s really did put up with so much bullshit I'm suprised the game survived as it did. I have faith that Bungie will deliver this next year, I hope to god they do. And to be honest I'm more addicted to the game now than I ever was in yr1 ;)

I want armor rerolling
