Guns kill people? Or...
So someone kills someone with a gun. Did the gun kill the person or did a person kill the person?
As you can see, this is a highly intellectual question.
Edit: Wow guys, gotta admit I didn't think this would blow up. Over 600 comments. Lots of good discussions, but try and keep it civil, there's no need to get violent.
Looks like the vast majority of us agree that people kill people, and guns are merely tools that make it easier. One recurring theme, and one the Obama is encouraging, is that in order to stem tragic murders, gun control laws must be implemented. I'm working on making a post exploring the results of gun control laws in other countries and if this idea of government gun control is one that should be pursued.

Just as a pencil is used to write and isn't responsible for what the user writes, the gun is the tool used by the human to kill the person. The person is the one doing it and the weapon is the tool.

1 ReplyI hate this debate. Of course an inanimate object isn't killing someone, it isn't a matter of opinion it's a fact. The other fact, is that they happen to be an inanimate object that makes killing people [i]really easy[/i]. That's all there is to consider. What it boils down to is, do you think the current status of accessibility to those guns is acceptable, or should it be tightened?

A guns is like any other tool, it can't commit a murder, only the person wielding it can. The only difference between a firearm and any other tool is the potential effectiveness in fulfilling this particular task.

I'm a gun victim, I watched in horror as my gun: dismantled itself, cleaned itself, reassembled itself, changed it's clip then disengaged it's safety and shot me! The gun was almost as scary as the guy who was using it.
