I waited a little over 48 hours and I agree, this part of the quest is completely asinine. I really hope they do something about it. On a side note- From the moment I got the quest, the Director said there were "rewards" waiting for me in the Reef, yet there was nothing. The moment Variks summoned me and I progressed, the marker went away. I feel like this quest probably is a bit buggy.
