Ballistic Style

Some weapons one, some the other.

For those who don't know- Hitscan : A type of damage hit registration used in games where there is absolutely no travel time, or path alteration of the virtual bullet. *Think of the Halo sniper.* Ballistic Style : Different than Hitscan because bullets possess semi-realistic properties, in that they travel at a certain speed, drop due to gravity, and ultimately require a different play style to hit targets.*Think of the Battlefield sniper* Obviously weapons like rocket or grenade launchers need to be ballistic style, on the other hand laser type weapons are normally Hitscan, but when it comes to primary weapons like auto rifles, shotguns, snipers, and LMGs, which style of hit detection would you prefer in Destiny? Cheers!

  • Everything ballistic style would be a massive bear of coding, probably causing lag in big battles. I can see anything with a natural arc (missiles, grenade launchers, thrown grenades, for example) being ballistic. Making realistic sniper bullets (wind, humidity, bullet drop) would effectively nerf the sniper into the ground or limit it's use to a very, very few sniper specialists. Everything else should be hitscan. My two cents.

    • Since destiny is based in our solar system, maybe for earth and other planets ballistic

    • If the kill times are quick, projectile based, if longer kill times, hit-scans.

    • If lasers hitscan, if bullets ballistic. Simple and both realistic

Well if destiny had ballistic style it would have to also calculate all these variable which would be difficult for fast firing sub machine guns or LMG's. There would also need to be a way for the player to see these variables and know how to compensate for these factors. So, ballistic would be interesting for snipers and create them more difficult while bringing more respect to skilled sniper users. But regular weapons should stay hitscan.

            • Wow, I honestly expected a lot more Hitscan votes, interesting. I wonder if Bungie realizes this trend away from exclusively Hitscan towards a mix of the two depending on the weapon.

            • Yeah, laser and (if they're in it) plasma weapons should be hitscan, conventional firearms should be ballistic, and this would actually make the game more realistic. So in short I AGREE.

              • It pisses me off when there's an entire second between when a shot goes off and when it hits an enemy that is right in front of me, sometimes within melee distance. In that kind of time, he can lunge and stab me, and I die instantly. It's not as bad when the shot hits them and I still get my kill, but with some games, CoD being the chief offender, my shots magically disappear after I die. I'll take smooth over realistic.

                • I'd prefer ballistic, except without bullet drop. I'd like to have to lead my target through my sniper scope without having to solve quadratic equations in my head to compensate for wind speed, Coreolis effect, and gravity. Using a sniper at range in Bf4 is next to impossible unless you spend hours practicing or use a range finder.

Snipers ballistic but only because I welcome the challenge and its more fulfilling. If this game turns out to be like cod in pvp instead of a halo play style Its going to be to easy for skilled snipers I mean without bullet drop and a insta hit because lets face it thats what hit-scan is.

                        • I can't stand Hitscan. Halo CE and Halo 3 ran projectiles and in LAN play it proved to raise the skill gap significantly, online Halo 2's dated 2004 netcode caused the trigger pull, and the projectile hit detection that caused a feign bullet travel that worked VERY WELL for online play, while in Halo 3 the poor netcode caused too many inconsistencies with bullet travel. Halo Reach and 4 went back to hitscan, but a key difference is that netcode since 2010 released games has improved so drastically that it is actually DETRIMENTAL to the gameplay by having such a primate-level skill gap in gun-play. With modern netcode advancements and hopefully dedicated servers, Ballistic is the way to go. It gives players with skill and who dedicate time to practice a clearly rewarded advantage over unskilled and novice players. That said the projectile speed shouldn't be quite as slow as it was in Halo 3, bullets in that game took about as long to reach their destination as a paintball. Just enough for shot leading to be important, but not enough to lose the consistency and powerful feel of weapons is the way to go.

I choose both because it's possible for both. If you are using a projectile weapon, then no, the hit should never be instant. Quick reason why: The other day I was playing titanfall. I just happen to jump up to spider man off a wall when in the split second I was in mid air I saw the trail of a sniper bullet pass under my feet. The fact that I missed being killed by a tiny fraction of my perceived time, and that I just jumped over a bullet - that feeling of realism gave me goosebumps. I want that in destiny.

                          • Considering the Halo CE sniper was OP, and every noob ran for it because of how easy it is to use, I'm going with Ballistic.
