The Aim Assist Issue

It's no secret that the Crucible is more or less abandoned in terms of balance, but something HAS to be done. The state of bullet magnetism is just disastrous. Perks and stats barely matter to any weapon. If it doesn't have great aim assist, it gets dismantled. Period. Every "Unbroken" Guardian, along with those on their heels, uses the same loadout; a Spare Rations or Thorn paired with a Beloved or Mindbenders Ambition. Why? Because the guns aim for you. If your crosshair is in the same county as your opponents head, you best believe you're hitting crits with those guns. Spare Rations is the biggest offender with an aim assist stat of 92. Quick question, Bungie: why? If your reply is to just use the same loadout to compete, let me remind you that this game is a looter shooter: the entire point is to use a bunch of different kinds of weapons. Limiting myself to a couple of choices would be unbelievably and laughably stupid. Obviously, a blanket nerf to bullet magnetism is needed, but specific cases should be tuned accordingly. Kinetic Hand Cannons released during Season of the Drifter with aim assist stats of 92 (not naming any names) should take a hit harder than weapons with lower aim assists. I think it's be best if all weapons of the same archetype rolled with the same aim assist stat. As I said, if a weapon doesn't have good aim assist, it's pretty much going to be dominated by other weapons with higher aim assist stats, regardless of perks and other stats.

  • I always thought the game was pretty forgiving on headshots since moving from Halo to destiny 1, 5 years ago. Probably need to find a different game if you want it lessened. I believe it's this way to make it easier for players to shoot each other.

    • Just to be clear, aim assist and bullet magnetism aren’t the same thing.

      • The hitboxes in this game are simply too big. As one of those “unbroken players” you are talking about (although I dont use spare rations, thorn, or mindbenders at least unless I need to in comp) this game is grossly easy, on mnk and controller alike. Controller you get insane aim assist and keyboard and mouse you get no recoil, paired with the huge hitboxes you have a game with a very small skillgap. Going from this game to other games like Halo reach, R6 siege and especially CSGO, I realize how much Destiny just pampers you. This game isnt competitive for a lot of reasons but I feel like for this game to be taken seriously from a comp standpoint the 1v1 duels simply need to be harder. The gap between a good shot and a average shot in a hand cannon duel just feels nonexistent and it doesnt feel like theres much separating the best from the average or above average since gunplay is so easy.

        • Spare Rations and Thorn is a PC thing, and yet you're commenting on aim assist. There is much more aim assist on console and you don't see that many Spare Rations and Thorn being used.

              • YOu see us using Spare rations because It's a good primary 150 with random rolls. Im not going to use year 1 150s with less range, not to mention thorn is a 2 head one body low resilience guardian. If aim assistance was the problem it would be Graviton Lance all over again.

                • I don't think it only is aim assist. I think some other things are important too like handling, stability and range. Also the scope is of a big influence, the rate of fire, time to kill, perks. Everybody has a certain preference. Just saying aim assist is too easy I think. My complain is that some weapons have way too much aim assist or are too easy and can 1 hit. The problem with these weapons are mostly that they are too easy to use. Most annoying guns in my opinion are: - High impact, long range, backup plan fusions like Erentil. - Telesto's. Shots on grounds and walls can also 1h in crucible. Rather only see it 1h on direct hits in crucible. - Linear fusion rifles like arbalest that only require special ammo and have tons of aim assist. - Shotguns. Range should be reduced slightly. - Wardcliff. No aiming is needed and can kill around corners. - Lord of Wolves. Too much range. - Jotunn. Should be a power weapon.

Honestly I think the aim assist thing has it's roots in Destiny starting as a console-thing only. Existing mechanics got ported and adapted into the PC version since they have so many stats built into the game's core design that affect those mechanics. First establish that bullet magnetism is another term for bigger hitboxes. Would it be nice to not have Jupiter-sized head hitboxes on MnKB to increase the skill floor / -ceiling gap? Yes. Probably. With the P2P shenanigans that will always be part of Destiny I have a small underlying reserved disclaimer for that in my back-pocket. Would have to see. Was not around in D2Y1. Would it make the game more competetive? Yes. Does Destiny need to be more competetive? No. Destiny is not a competetive FPS game. This is from a 5500 pvp-only player. Destiny is at it's core a fast paced arcade-to-the-extreme shooter. For true competetive FPS experience other better options exist. The current situation at least offers a level playing field. Do I want bungo's development time be spent overhauling the core gunplay gameplay mechanics over all the other priorities? With the stuf I mentioned above being a consideration? I'm veering more towards a no. Eventually this discussion will boil down to separate pve/pvp balancing. Something past experiences also make an unrealistic expectation. For me personally. A single focus point that could realistically be a thing is aim assist on 150 rpm HCs specifically though. Like you stated. I feel 150s in general were all made with relatively high aim-assist because of the high RPM resulting in higher need in recoil management. With shadowkeep's HC recoil nerfs this could be an outdated aspect.

Bullet magnetism is very different from aim assist. Aim assist makes it so when you aim with a controller it will put your retical on y target & cause your character to to stay more generally orientated towards the direction of that player. Some guns its not noticeable. Others with extremely high base line aim assist makes weapons like beloved annoying to play against. BUT keyboard and mouse have aim assist disabled. Bullet Magnetism is effected by the accuracy stat(also helm mod). Which is a hidden stat on all weapons but bows and has two effects. The first is giving bullets more magnetism the second is increasing the hit box of your target. As an extra side note. The mod "Targeting Adjuster" and the perk "Moving Target"(The aim assist part) do nothing for PC players with a keyboard and mouse. As aim assist is disabled.

                        • Tbh it's -blam!-ing weird that different weapons of the same type have different aim assist stats ie one sniper having more aim assist than another. Definitely agree that it should be the same within archetypes at least.

                        • iirc, the bullet magnetism is tied to making the game more... 'family friendly,' by lowering the skill cap to a degree. I agree with you on nerfing this stat, it's foolish as it is. Emphatically so on the PC, aiming with a mouse is so much more fluid and easy - adding the head-seeking bullets is just gravy on top. If there was fine tuning for the PC, it needs a revisit.

Sounds like a You problem. Also aim-assist is part of Bungie's "secret sauce" that makes their shooter games feel good to the majority of players. So the notion that Bungie would turn their back on this to help you with whatever is you're on about..... ....is pretty much a non-starter. Bungie tried to reduce the aim-assist of weapons with vanilla D2, and it was a "disaster". This game is never going to be an e-sport. Accept that, and try to find a way to enjoy the game as it is.

                              • You're not wrong, but the infestation of lag switchers, drophackers, and DDoSers due to a lack of dedicated servers far outweighs this issue in Crucible.

                              • Well you're right in a way that aim assist is usually the single largest reason on consoles for the popularity of any weapon. The moment I hear someone say that they find this particular weapon crisp, I just check the aim assist stat and it's usually pretty high. People deny this fact that they are not the ones aiming, it's just the stat doing it for you otherwise they would be good with any other weapon of the same archetype even if it has low aim assist. This is the reason why people crutch on things like MIDA, Spare Rations, etc.
