Destiny 2 Beginning Ideas

Since it has been discussed at length that Destiny 2 will be a complete character reboot and while very few people posting on the forums seem to think this is a fair or justified course of action, I believe it could be under the right circumstances. If our progress is going to be totally wiped, I believe an acceptable method would be if something catastrophic occurs at the beginning of Destiny 2 that we can somehow reverse slowly over time of a long campaign. It is no small fact that Destiny’s story was severely lacking until the Taken King expansion and then again it fell short in its possibilities with the Rise of Iron. One idea I recently read about involving Destiny, and really popular video games as a whole, is the concept of failure. Destiny pitches multiple apocalyptically bad scenarios and enemies at us over the course of its 3 year run time, but all these villains (ie Black Garden, Crota’s generals, Skolas’s capture after summoning House of Wolves through time, Oryx, and Siva Devils and Iron Lord Mutants) fall to us in single player campaign extremely quickly and easily. And while for the sake of using all these events as stepping stones to get players to “Endgame level” PvE content involving the raids or Prison of Elders was a good idea, we need a formula change. Why, if each of these threats are truly the worst the thing the City has ever seen, are we able to stroll through in a 30 mins or less and maybe a few deaths, with very few follow up consequences. Sure some of the strikes we did like facing the Undying Mind, Restorative Mind, and Kovik help to do clean up to these threats but in no way are these truly challenging enough to force us Guardians to retreat, regroup and adapt. The closest we come to this idea, and this is why its successful story was a hit, was the Taken King come to seek revenge. With this evil introduced, we saw the destruction of the Awoken armada, a true setback for the Guardian’s allies established in our small universe. And what did we do as Guardians? We learned a new set of skills in the new subclasses, and those missions stylized with lore and cinematics are perfect. We need more of this in Destiny 2. We need threats that result from our actions throughout all of Destiny and we need to find ways to adapt to these threats, may it be new subclass ideas, new destinations to discover new teachers and equipment, or new paths to teach us how to use the Traveler’s Light. So here are my thoughts on how Destiny’s sequel could be an improvement and continuation of our story while tying up some loose ends. Many of these ideas are not my own in original concept and the path of execution, I will base off of experiences in other games; I’m not taking credit for these ideas, I’m just putting my thoughts out there for the continuation of the discussion on the game that we all play and enjoy, even if we don’t always admit it.
Addressing the past as the first thing in Destiny 2 a. Assuming we can choose one of the three current Guardian classes, we open into Destiny 2 by picking a class. And this is simply picking, Titan, Warlock, Hunter. For returning players, I’ll discuss how I think we can carry our characters over into the sequel a little later. Upon picking a class we are drawn into a voiceover cinematic, describing the characteristics of our chosen class, and dropped into our first mission. A mission focusing on our Vanguard leader counterparts. b. For each Vanguard leader, (Zavala, Ikora, Cayade-6) a story mission involving their past accomplishments, demonstrating how they became selected for their leadership positions at the start of Destiny. c. A mission involving Zavala and the Battle of Twilight Gap would be an awesome experience. A battle that truly defined the future of the city would be incredible to see from the front lines. Even if this battle could be seen through the eyes of a random titan on the battlefield, but one that fights along Lord Shaxx and Commander Zavala, this is an event I would bet every Guardian would love. But even if this was just a cinematic, it would still be spectacular. Given the 3 Titan subclasses we can use now, imagine the tactics of Titans standing before a sea of advancing Fallen. Defenders laying down a solid wall of bubbles, with Armor bubbles on the front and a second line of bubbles with Blessings and Weapons of Lights. Strikers advance through the layers of bubbles, slamming the first waves of Fallen in craters of Havoc Arc light. With the front lines decimated and disorganized, Sunbreakers leap through the buffing Defender bubbles and rain exploding Hammers across the battlefield to obliterate the milling masses of Eliksni…. d. For the start of a hunter campaign, Cayde-6 embarking on a daring hunt/assassination in the wilds of Venus, cracking wise with his enemies as he cuts them down swiftly, smoothly as the rogue we’ve all envisioned him to be. But while he seems in perfect control of his surroundings, we get flashes of his past memories, the reasons behind all his playing cards, of his life’s choices that forced him to become an Exo. Cayde’s story is laid out before us, how this great hunter accepted his position of leadership through a dare, while being able to play through one of his last truly free moments as the independent legend we know him to be. e. Ikora Rey…. I admit this one I haven’t been able to give much thought to. Her mystery would be wonderful to explore, from her rebellious ways as one of the strongest competitors in the Crucible, to the wanderer that gained unknown wisdom throughout the solar system. Perhaps a mission where she communes with powers still unknown to us, or how she learned the value of teamwork by gathering her Hidden and strategically placing them throughout our solar system, especially in places we have not traveled to yet in this current Destiny universe. f. While none of these ideas are fully flushed out, mostly because I’m not the greatest lore scholar, all three stylized missions would be lengthy, hopefully with multiple short cut scenes and at least one longer shot with sustained dialogue. And the purpose of these story missions…to give us a stronger emotional connection to the roots of these characters and to improve the lore from the first Destiny. Now I realize that this approach would be mostly for the benefit of returning players of the Destiny universe and probably won’t have the same level of impact on brand new players to a sequel. But while I believe Bungie should include many elements to draw new players to their product, the need to appease the returning masses first, after all we are the ones who have funded their first 3 years through Vanilla, DLC’s and now micro-transactions. I say we deserve this nostalgic Vanguard/City send-off to lift us up…because the idea that I saw in the forums a few months back is what I believe absolutely must happen immediately after these opening missions.
I realize this is quite long and I will have follow up posts to add to this but they are broken up due to there length. I know i couldnt fit the reat here, so look for my contd post with the same title. Thoughts? https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/218324006?sort=0&page=0

  • I fully agree with this especially with the fact that all of our actions have consequences good, or bad. Rise of iron doesn't give is a very easy way to change. The only change I was able to make was leveling up my Warlock to 40 and getting nova bomb unlocked. But other than that nothing very good. I love destiny but I seriously think in destiny 2 we need new characters new threats, New subclasses, and maybe even a war between the classes. Like a real war, not just forum argument, or better yet a faction war.

  • What about the cabal attack the tower and we have only enough time to gear up one item per slot. And that's all we can carry on to destiny 2, everything else will be destroyed and lost... That way you can keep that one item (if you have one) that you really care about... That would be a compromise I could live with and would give us old players some kind of continuity...

Destiny 2 will be a fresh start in terms of characters etc...otherwise they would not call it Destiny 2. Everything else would be an expansion, not a sequel. It may not be on topic but I don't know why people don't want a new start. Making everything transfering over would mean to carry over every weakness as well. Destiny's engine is relatively outdated (updated Halo Reach Engine) and I'm not talking of graphics (game looks beautiful which is a remarkeable job from Bungies great artist)... From many rumors and patch logs we always assumed that Destiny still has many flaws and design choices which makes it hard for the dev team to implement changes. Destiny was in development when Halo ODST and later Halo Reach launched. So actually that engine is old AF. Even though RoI is current gen only, doesn't mean everything changed. Remember the Kotaku articles? They are right. So in other words, Bungie never lied, they simply changed plans which is natural in game development. So a fresh start could help Destiny a lot. They may not recreate a brand new engine, (impossible in just 2 years) but they can fix all the major problems they had with their engine and if I can experience more content in a shorter time frame, because of it, I will take this instead of my old shit from D1. We are in year 3. Remembering all the fun I had with my friends and D1, I'm more than thankful for this game and its creators. Anyways, the beginning of D2 obviously is about the City being attacked cauz for the most time we never got that feeling that our little city is in need of protection. Our enemies must fear guardians more than the darkness itself by now, lol. Time

        • They most likely started working on what we call Destiny 2 as soon as TTK entered its dormant phase. With A list titles needing 2-4 years to typically come to market, Bungie's schedule of new content yearly or so for 10 years has always been ambitious. So we can speculate all we want, but I'm speculating that Destiny 2 was already written before RoI shipped. The best you could hope for is to post this in Cozmo's suggestion box and pray someone is reading it.

        • Things I think destiny 2 must have: -Dedicated servers -Bosses that are unique (like how aksis is actually a vehicle enemy) -different versions of raids (eg. Taken crota or siva enhanced vex) -50% of the grimoire lore should be in game -in depth story/cutscenes -no more micro transaction events "coughs cough fol - reworked weapon/bullet mechanics -balanced wepons -wider range of weapons -wider range armour and armour sets -wider range of vehicles and models -vehicle combat -better reward system -different weapon meta stats for pve and pvp -add in some wacky features of any kinds -some comedy - fun side quests -different voice actors for ghost (I kinda miss dinkelbot) -exotics should not be vital (I'm looking at you ghally) -warring factions (pvp factions) -make a even amount of pvp maps that favour on different strategies (shotgun maps and sniper maps for instance) -make race and class effect dialogue -more customizable armour and weapons -more melee weapons (the swords were cool but expand on that please) -amhamkaras (need I say more?) -the nine -more Rasputin -more story on the exo stranger -player home? -guild base? -beasts that aren't part of enemy factions -insane secret bosses or other Easter eggs -epic events -more Cade!

          • I think it'd be cool if it took your most played guardian within the last months play time got all of your best weapons and made your new guardian fight them. Your old guardian became corrupt due to all the darkness it had to fight. It was just too much. You have to kill nolanbot, and then kill your OP guardian. It could be a very intense, scary and interesting fight. It be even more dope if it fought similar to you. No one would know your guardian quiet like you. All those weapons you collected and destroyed enemies with would be turned on your new guardian. It could be very awesome.

            • I feel more attached to Overwatch characters, and there is only one cutscene in the game. Destiny 2 is the last "expansion" that I will keep up with, and if it sucks, then that will project the future years of destiny. Destiny 2 is the "ultimatum" for me.

All these ideas sound cool, but let's be honest for a sec. Bungie and/or Activision are probably going to make another disappointing story. Just saying man.

                • To each their own, but after all the crap Bungie and Activision has pulled with its player base, I'd think that people would learn their lesson and hold them to much higher standards, and then buy their product after they did right by the player. You know, the ones who keep these companies' lights on. The companies who take those people for granted and treat them like dirt. But I guess some people just love to bend over and take it. It's pretty sad...

I would personally like to change Cayde and Ikora's intro's. So here's my ideas: Cayde: Andal Brask is dead. Cayde is hunting Taniks through the Alps. There isn't even a hint of the Cayde we know now. He wants revenge. He sprints through fallen outposts, taking out their inhabitants as he goes, even borrowing their armaments to use against their former owners. He turns a corner, and the camera pans out, showing more intimidating mountains, but in-between, many Ketches are docked into a huge mountain base. Cayde has accidentally found the House of King's base in the European Dead Zone. Cayde has not told the Vanguard about this. More on this discovery would come in the story, but right now, its just a showcase of Cayde's skill, and to add some mystery to Cayde; Why hadn't he told anyone about his discovery, what happened there that shocked him so bad that he refused to share one of the biggest finds in the century? Ikora: Deep within the reef, Ikora's footsteps disturb space dust on the floor of a colony ship. Next to her footprints are the prints of many visitors; Fallen footsteps mingled with an unidentifiable prints, marred by the sweep of a cloak. Ikora heads toward the wreckage of an ancient Ketch embedded in a colony ship. The Ketch's lights are on. Someone is home. Ikora calmly walks into the ketch, and cocks the Invective as she Walks in. Xur sits calmly behind a desk in the Ketch's cargo hold, surrounded by large containers marked with the nine's insignia. They stare at each other without speaking. Ikora says: "Don't bother explaining. I knew when a few fallen were found with the symbol of Scarship Fil'iks ascendunt, still dirty with reef space dust" Xur: "So the Wolves aren't the only ones prowling the Reef." They stare at each other again, when Ikora suddenly whips around, firing her invective at a Fallen Vandal just inches behind her. She is surrounded by Fallen. A high ranking fallen from the house of Kings laughs from far behind her. He has a symbol marked upon his face that matches a symbol on the side of the Ketch. Ikora nova-bombs the leader before he has time to taunt and cleanly takes out all the fallen in the area. Ikora says: "It's time you set up shop somewhere else." This shows how Xur came to be in the tower. The mystery of the wreckage of the ship that the fight occurred on pops up later in the story. Sorry if my writings bad.

                        • To Start, sorry my english. :o) I have an idea, when you play trails of..., you and your team play maybe 8 matches, and if you win all 8, you have to play the last game against 3 invited random players, with a elo maybe 20% over you own teams elo. The invited random players can for ex. be you and me and a 3. player, you will suddently be invited and have to press the x button (within 20sec)., like when you are accepting anything els in Destiny (Xbox one). If the Trails players win the last match, they get som uniq gear, if the other team win they get it.

                        • Here's an idea they can consider. If you are going to make the game a LOOT-GRINDER, then how about making it so that you have to grind out the game's hardest PVE endgame content to get the games best PVE rewards? What a concept!

                          • Want it to last awhile 1... At least 2 raids at the start then have dlc raids 2. At least 3 or more raid sets available to get so the grind would be worth it instead of only 1 set then its pointless after a month 3... More character customization tired and everyone looking alike 4... More weapons from raid drops instead of just one type per weapon... Note this also applies to trails and pvp make the grind worth it lots of customization and options
