Bungie, Start Pushing Destiny into the MMO/FPS Hybrid

As of right now I am going to make this a long post so bare with me. Destiny 2 as of right now is hurting because of the idea of focusing more along the lines of the generic FPS genre instead of becoming the MMO/FPS many of of hardcores saw glimpses of in D1. There is no excitment in the guns, or abilities I wield. Even with this DLC coming up, if your going to increase the level cap, are you expanding upon the talent nodes for all the subclasses. Right now, having only two ways to play per subclass is the exact OPPOSITE of what we wanted. Destiny 2 is missing the chaos aspect, excitement, the for better words "unbalanced" aspect of PvE. Sure PvP is somewhat balanced but you killed the PvE scene as a result. START SEPARATING PVP AND PVE. Disable abilites, perks, and even some weapons if you have to keep PvP balanced. However, Make PvE insane. Let us have the sensation of going ham, with well thought out challenges. Make Prestige mode of raids only for the elites, while having the standard raid be a way for all players to experience a dumbed down version of the raid while making the Prestige version of the fights have many more mechanics, basically making it an entirely new fight. Give it full matchmaking for the normal version while adding in a LFG system in game where we can find "statics" or even clans that help us build bonds. Make the Prestige versions of these raids the only way to hit the cap and have amazing weapons that are worthy of the challenge you give us. Develop large scale strikes, lets have 12 man strikes that have raid-like mechanics to help teach people the basics of raiding while giving people gear that is a steeping stone to the Prestige raid. Make Heroic strikes a special challenge with their own reward drops, unique looking vehicles/sparrows, with beefed up versions of the bosses. Make Destiny the defining MMO/FPS experience. I want to feel powerful, but also fight powerful challenges. Edit: I also want to point out one other thing. Destiny's setting is amazing, yet I am disappointed above all else of Bungie's lack of being creative and asking for feedback on things to truly make Destiny stand out. I want Destiny to not only have 2 million players at launch, I want this community to grow to 10 million users after years.

  • Something ive noticed is that d2 took the exact opposite route borderlands 2 did with its sequel. Borderlands 1 actually had some pvp, it was pretty horrendous and unbalances so for borderlands 2 they just removed it entirely outside of duels. They also doubled down on the craziness in the rest of the game, weapons and abilities, this created chaos and hilarity and was a game i thoroughly enjoyed for 3 years. D2 on the other hand took the opposite approach, to become as generic as it can be without being halo or call of duty, reduce everything that made it unique and double down on..... nothing really. The entire game feels uninspired even the story which seems the only thing people say is better than d1 is still soo bad nobody mentions it outside of its comparity to d1 ( if you have to compare a slightly polished turd to a regular turd, signs are the polished turd might as well be just as bad). I wantes to enjoy d2 but it seems as though its suffering from an identity crisis. Theres the pve side which is crying out in pain then theres the pvp side which has been forgotten by all but the most dedicated players. I would say gearbox made the right call by playing into what made borderlands borderlands. I would say bungie made the wrong call by playing into what made destiny forgettable.

Well start by allowing us to taylor our builds. Look at any other RPG, the character skill tree is is more than 9000 times more customizable than D2. Heck even Division had a more customizable skill tree than Destiny. Our builds shouldn't be level to 20 then forget. We should have to earn skill points from activities and such to unlock nodes in our builds. Wouldn't it be fun to have specific skill nodes unlock upon completing a raid? Wouldn't create even greater incentive if we could only upgrade that skill after completing the prestige version x number of times? As for weapons, the weapon system iz actually fine as a base weapon system. That is, every weapon in the game is fine as a starting point. What is needed is a weapon leveling and customization system. The hell with infusion, allow us to increase gear power level by simply leveling up the gear through usage. Also, introduce a more robust mod economy. I know most are going to cringe when thinking mods in this game, but that's only because this game doesn't have an actual mod economy. The mods in this game are more or less trivial. Allow us to have 3 to 6 mods per gear item. And make mods add perks. That way we can customize what ever weapon we like to do whatever we want. Make mods drop in engrams as for endgame we'll likely be farming for mods to add that specific perk and not base gear.

        • Coming from WoW, i can safely say that this game has a ton of potential to provide a great WoW alternative. They should heavily focus on making this an MMO/FPS experience. I will write a few things that i would love to see implemented and hope that if implemented other palyers will enjoy them too: 1) World raids. Every week on all the planets at random hours Bosses will appear. These Bosses will have huge life pools and will require the co-operation of at least 30 people to defeat them. Once defeated they can drop bright engrams, legendary gear, legendary mods, exotic gear (rarely), sparrows, shadders, legendary unique ghost shells etc. The Bosses will respawn on different locations on each planet each week and people will have a weekly lock out mechanic to stop them from farming the same boss continuously. So one player can kill each boss once every week and receive loot from it. This will actually promote the social aspect of the game and add replay value to the game as well as promote exploration, communication etc. 2) Professions. They should add professions that reward players with specific loot the more they practice that profession. For example they can add gunsmith where players will defeat enemies and those enemies can drop schematic for weapons and upon receiving the schematic that player can now craft that weapon if they farm the appropriate materials. The materials will require the player to farm certain groups of enemies in order to gather what is needed. They can also add mechanic, same principle as above but players can now craft sparrows. They can add scribe profession that awards special titles to people that explore the world and gather pieces of lore to complete a specific piece of history. They can add designer profession where people will farm materials and craft unique shadders (they choose what color combination to use per shadder) and they can craft unique ghost shells. Anyways you get the drift. Multiple profession will be allowed and players will not be restricted to how many professions they can have. 3) Transmogrification. Players can use the model skin of any similar weapon type to their equipped weapon. That is purely an aesthetic addition, but many times i get weapons which i like how they look but hate how they shoot, that way i can make any weapon of similar type ( smg to smg, auto rifle to auto rifle) look however i want them to look. 4) Faction large scale pvp. Let's say you are Dead Orbit and i am New Monarchy or Future War Cult, there is only one way to settle which faction is the best and that is to fight it out :p There will be a specific area were people of different factions can have a large scale pvp event where the winners will get some faction tokens and shadders. The pvp could be something like 30 vs 30 vs 30 on an a huge pvp arena and it can be a classic deathmatch to determine who wins. Fun for the whole family :p

One thing that Warframe gets right. Your characters feel OP. You move incredibly fast, fly around like a ninja, ability spams, super super strong builds. All because it has Devs that listen / communicate / care, and more importantly because it’s not held back by PVP.

            • Well said, this is what I bought D1 for, then after 3 years and a lot of updates I EXPECTED something like this in D2. I admit I was wrapped up in the hype for the first few weeks but soon began to realize what D2 was at it core.... a lack luster, bland game that is confused on what genre it is. Do I still play the game, almost every night, but I still feel let down by Bungie and there "Vision" of what the players want. I'll still play the game and continue to hope for the best because I already paid for the expansion, but I will NOT pre-order Destiny 3.... if it even makes another one after this tragic mistake of game.

              • This. This is the game concept I signed on for in D1 beta, and it's the concept that keeps getting steered away from. Seriously, bungie, I'm hanging on because I love the world, gunplay, and aesthetics, but I'm sick of watery tiny DLC's, pathetic character perk builds, and solo/multi/open endgame content. I want this to be a game I keep coming back to, and right now? I cannot justify buying the DLC. Just not gonna be worth it. Give us back the level of activities we had at the end of Destiny 1 and EXPAND from there. That's what we all wanted in the first place.

              • You're describing your ideal game, not something that would have mass appeal. They'd scare the pants off of newbies if they came out of the gate with a game that complex. People need time to get a grip on what's there first. I'm confident the game will evolve over time.

                • The game was an mmorpgfps hybrid during D1 Vanilla. The general consensus of people didn't like it. They didn't like the RNG. They didn't like how hard it was to get exotics, like not getting GHorn for 2 years. They didn't like the relic iron scablands farm. They didn't like having to upgrade their guns. They didn't like being told their grenade choice sucked - btw I fully expect every Guardian to only have 1 grenade choice by the time D3 rolls out. They didn't like they had to run VoG to be Level 30. They didn't like being Forever 29. They didn't like not being able to get into a raid group because they were 29 and didn't have GHorn. All of those things Bungie removed, because the players were vocal against them. The majority spoke, or at least the vocal majority, and they wanted no part of the mmorpg thing. So here we are, a looter shooter with a lackluster loot pool.

                  • *sigh* I look at these legendary weapons and I think of the rolls I wish I could have. We went from a game where you could have triple tap, casket mag, and firefly on a scout rifle to a game where you choose between using a triple tap scout, a scout with deeper ammo reserves, or a scout with dragonfly. Why not bring back a handful of perks (leave out stuff like LitC/final round and the shitty stuff like guerilla fighter and exhumed) and call those weapon mods also. I'm tired of weapons being a take it or leave it kinda deal because D1 allowed for every weapon to shine.

                  • I would love for them to finally separate PVE and PVP. Keep the new gun system in PVP and give PVE back the feeling of power and fun that made D1's PVE really good. IMO

                  • What make it so bad, except for a handful of times, PvE numbers always outpaced PvP numbers, despite A. PvE content being stagnant for up to a year and B. PvP getting the majority of updates and tweaks catered towards them. Imagine how much bigger the PvE numbers would be if Bungie actually focus most, if not all, of their attention to the PvE.

Destiny 1 was a hybrid MMO loot grinder RPG. There were reliable static rolls available for purchase in the tower for those unwilling or unable to grind. Now everything is bathed in mediocrity.

                    • I completely agree with you but unfortunately look at what we were given. There’s no way Bungie will ever do any of this. The latest stream showed that they have zero intent of making this game great. I want to play this game so bad but it’s just utter crap compared to Destiny. There’s no excuse for the game they provided. I remember Luke Smith speaking pre launch about how people would be logging in to chase shaders...and he was serious. WTF

                        • I would rather see Bungie improve the RPG aspects of this game. I think this would allow more player customization. I posted a long time ago that at it's heart Destiny is first and foremost a shooter. Bungie is still struggling with the RPG and MMO aspects of Destiny. In my opinion, the RPG and MMO aspects should really only apply for PvE and special PvP events such as trials and Iron Banner. Since light or power doesn't matter in the Crucible, Bungie should just normalize the ability rates. It would be cool if they offered speed ups for grenades and supers that randomly spawn on the maps much like how power weapons used to spawn in Bungies old Halo games. There would then be mad dashes to these speed ups like there was sword, rocket launcher, or sniper rifle. It would add a new dimension to PvP. Just some thought how Bungie could improve Destiny.
