Difficulty: Is anyone even playing this game without exploits on harder settings (Nightfall, heroic etc.)?

Yes

No

I’m am serious here. Is anyone playing the missions, strikes etc. on harder difficulty (Nightfall, lvl 28 Heroic etc.) the way they are “supposedly” designed? I can’t fathom this. Everything is killing you in basically one hit (or one hit and a gust). I mean how do you survive 4 Wizards and 3 Knights at the same time in the Summoning Pits while staying inside the room when everything needs just to look at you to kill you? I don’t think I am a bad player. If I do strike playlists I’m usually the one without any death while also having the most kills etc. I’ve been beating nightfall strikes and heroics for weeks… just not “the way they are meant to be played”. (tm Nvidia) To cut to the chase: I exploit the living crap out of the AI and terrain. By BlameItOnBrown:
OP raises a good point, and I think many people may have missed it. Is it actually possible to run the nightfall/weekly strikes by actually playing the strike the way it was intended it to be played? Phogoth is a great example, because I don't know if it is actually possible to go into the final chamber with Phogoth on Nightfall, and not die once the high level minions spawn. Can anyone here say they have done it that way? If not, then isn't there something fundamentally wrong with the game's difficulty gradient?
Maybe I worded it poorly but its basically this.

  • I don't think learning the limits of the game world and using them to your advantage is "exploiting" anything. Its called good strategy. Any idiot can run into the middle of a battle and die over and over again until he finally succeeds. If anything, you are exploiting the ability to respawn. If you use good tactics, and are smart about it, you can do it without needing to exploit excessive respawning thing.

  • I don't use any exploits, I just use logical strategy to gain an advantage. I kill Phogoth whilst in his chamber, but he can't hit me. :-P

  • Is hopping behind that wall where no adds can get to you on the final boss of this week's nightfall (Nexus) an "exploit?" Because by the simple fact that Bungie built a wall into that otherwise perfectly circular room that you can regenerate behind, pop out to put some shots on the boss, funnel the adds to you and take them out, etc. basically means to me that that's how Bungie "intended" that fight to be beaten. At the very least, they put it in as a legitimate option. If you want to take a more difficult approach, be my guest, but I think using these types of "exploits" qualifies as "working as intended."

Yes. Look, I know difficultly is variable from gamer to gamer.. but I personally enjoy a challenge in a game and am a sucker for punishment. It's really not that bad.. especially when you have a good crew put together.

  • hmm. i might be straying here.... but i dont consider same mechanics + more hp (and/or mobs) + more damage = harder settings. sure i guess all that makes it harder in some way, but its just shooting things longer.

    • Staying in room on summoning pits isn't an exploit. If you stay in the room a shreiker appears, they anticipated people doing it

Sometimes its hard to say whats intented and what isnt. In nexus(nightfall) most people kill the last boss without jumping down. But this causes a minotaur to spawn behind you... So it looks like they expected people to camp up there.

        • From the design of each boss domain, it's obvious to me bungie designed these areas to be able to get through them relatively easy. Why they did this? Dunno, but I'm glad they did. You'd need one helluva good fireteam, with everyone level 30 to "properly" take out the bosses.

Using movement, terrain, and the verticality of the high jumping mechanics is all part of tactics. I did the Nightfall last week with a 3 man fire team legit with all of us in Phogath's room for the duration of the fight. When a Knight appeared, I used Plan C to burn his shield and we all focus fired and he was dead in seconds, then back to rockets on the boss, switch to primary to mow down most other adds, move and stay alive. When a Wizard appeared, another team member used a fire based special to take out his shield and then focus fired the wizards. It really is about cohesive teamwork and sound communication.

        • I don't even consider anything like glitching into a wall or other such mechanics, but I WILL hide in a hallway and take shot after carefully-planned shot in order to survive. As someone else said, I view Nightfall as a more realistic situation where one or two bullets means death, and I need to be careful and responsible.

        • I've done them legit, it is a lot of beating your head against a wall and is MUCH harder than the VoG. Basically, for those I've done it with legitly, it all comes down to focus fire and making laps... As much as I hate to say it, you basically place each team mate equadistant from each other and rotate around the boss chambers. While you rotate focus fire on the mobs in front of the "leader". As the "leader" drops, you revive him/her and he goes to the back of the train. This keeps everyone moving, dropping mobs fast, and also sets up a protocol for revives. It looks stupid, but is effective as the outskirts of each boss chamber usually has the best cover and it usually messes with the bosses targeting since your entire team is constantly losing line of sight to the boss and mobs.

        • In regards to nightfalls I run them solo every week just because it's actually easier that way because of how it scales with the number of players. Anyways I always just find a good spot to hide and patiently pick off all the enemies while taking little to no fire... But is that really an exploit? I mean in what war, fictional or non fictional, would anybody think it's a good idea to run around the middle of a battlefield jumping and trying to dodge bullets?

          • I've done 2 nightfalls legit. It's possible. Just not worth it if a cheese method is there. I'm gona cheese the hard raid for each DLC if it's possible because having a hard mode on the hardest activity is stupid. Not to mention locking equipment behind hard mode is bad as well.

Yeah I have done nightfall without cheesing it, but it's just repetitive and doesn't feel like an accomplishment. You can manipulate the enemies ability to predict your movement, kite the melee enemies easily enough, and don't get greedy on damaging the boss, it just takes some persistence. The problem is it takes so long and the rewards aren't worth the effort. Honestly though, I could do the whole raid solo if it didn't inherently require multiple people. It is way more efficient to just cheese everything. Even more efficient than that is to just not play this poor quality game, but that is another conversation altogether.

            • The heroics yes. I've done the heroic without cheesing them but I cant say the same for the nightfalls. When they enemies have the same dmg as whatever burn is activated some of those nightfalls are IMPOSSIBLE without cheating them.

            • I think to beat these challenges "legitimately", you would have to put serious thought into the composition of your fire team. You'd likely need a mix of abilities and supers which would help to keep your team alive. It's definitely doable but requires lots of planning and skill. I've used exploits for all but one of the nightfalls I've done so far and I consider myself an above average player in both pve and pvp. I won't be upset if bungie shuts down these exploits. As of right now I think the pve side of things is still fairly easy even at the nightfall and normal raid level (haven't done hard mode raid but looking forward to it). More challenge means more excitement and investment so bring on the exploit nerfs bungie. Force us to become better players!

            • It's possible to legitimately beat ANY strike in this game, even heroics and nightfalls. The reason most people prefer not to is because there are easier and quicker ways. Humans have always been about finding the easiest and quickest way to get something done. Would you rather spend 2 to 3 hours doing it legitimately, or 30 minutes exploiting the crap out of it? “What the ancients called a clever fighter is one who not only wins, but excels in winning with ease.” ― Sun Tzu, The Art of War

I don't look at fighting all those wizards and knights in the hallway by drawing them out and hiding as an "exploit". I look at it as smart tactics and necessary considering that what you said is accurate in that basically everything kills you in one or two hits (even splash damage in most cases).

              • There is a difference between exploiting and cleaver use of mechanics. Just think about that for a moment haha.
