Cryptarch Dev Notes Confusion
He Who Shall Not Be Named Long ago during development, the Cryptarch decoded engrams of a given color into gear of that same color. Early in 2014 we added randomness, both for better and worse, to the decrypting process. The result was that end-of-session engram decoding got a lot more exciting and the Cryptarch himself suddenly acquired a personality. Both of these experiences were positive additions to the game. But we didn't adequately communicate the potential random outcomes of decryption. Players see what looks like the familiar metaphor of item identification, while the Cryptarch thinks he's opening a grab bag of loot. Rage sharding of blues ensues. Expect to see changes to address this soon.
The above has left me a little confused. Maybe its the wording or perhaps just me. Are engrams going to be guaranteed to become the item of their corresponding color or are items going to have a higher probability of being random? Feedback or elaboration from any source would be appreciated. (I'm not sure where I should have posted this so I put it in Feedback, I can change it later if needed). Leave your thoughts. ^_^

  • Sounds like they're going to change the decryption process but, like everything else in that article, has not yet been changed. Look for it in a future patch. The only thing that has been changed today is the loot cave and the Queen's Wrath stuff.

    •
while the Cryptarch thinks he's opening a grab bag of loot
Engrams are supposed to be an enemy's personal transmat locker or something? The randomization makes a little more sense put in that context, but its still illogical that a Legendary Engram would produce a single Rare. You'd expect it to give 1 Legendary, or 3 Rares, or 4000 Glimmer, a Shard and some Spinmetal, or something.

      • As i understand they said that giving rng to engrams made the character he is now despice or loving him and also give you that feeling of lucky when you get something awesome. Probably they are just gonna change the tiers of the engrams or simply show you the decryption rate of the rewards so if your legendary engram turns green you cant come here at the forums raging instead you knew you had 10 of that happening and you were unlucky as hell.

They just need to make the engrams always turn into the color that they are period. It's hard enough to find a purple engram, we don't need to be let down by it turning into a green item.

          • I read it as saying they are going to better communicate the possible contents of a collected engram. They specifically mentioned color so I guess they might be changing the color hierarchy of engrams so that it is different from those of weapons.

            • What I am pretty sure that it means is that they think that the Cryptarch's crappy rng was a good thing because it "developed his character and gave him a personality" and that they were going to better inform people of the chances to actually get the same color loot as your engram which as of right now are at deplorably low levels

              • Yeah... I thought that was a little confusing too. I think they mean it's almost too random so there going to have a better chance of getting rare loot (this I say because they bring in foresight as to why they brought randomizing in the first place to the cryptarch).
