Why Are People Obsessed With Farming Engrams?
Everywhere I look on these forums, I see people complaining that they have been "farming engrams for hours and only getting uncommon or rare items". All these people looking for legendary gear, whining that the engrams they pick up do not give it to them. You people do realize that there are about 6 vendors on the Tower that sell legendary items right? 3 factions, a Crucible quartermaster, a Vanguard quartermaster and the guy that sells Crucible armor. I am saving to get Dead Orbit armor right now. I already have the chest and arms, and I will probable get the legs today. All of these people sell legendary gear that you can easily work towards, but instead you are all trying to "farm" engrams and hope that what you get is good. Seriously, if you spent as much time working towards these vendors as you did "engram farming", you would have legendary gear by now. How about instead of working towards luck, you work towards buying items from the vendors. It really isn't that hard. This is the second week of the game being out and I almost have a full Dead Orbit armor set.
EDIT: Ok, apparently people are taking this post the wrong way. I DO NOT HATE FARMING. Farming is apart of this game, just at it is in any loot heavy game. I enjoy getting engrams just as much as the next Guardian, and they are very useful. My post was specifically about people that farm for hours with no results, then complain that getting legendary gear is impossible. And the whole time, it is being sold in the Tower. Yes, you max out at 100 marks. Then by all means, acquire loot however you want, it doesn't matter to me. I was just trying to hush up the whiners who ONLY FARM engrams and get no results, then complain about how the game is broken; especially when it is for sale right above their heads.
EDIT 2: Seriously, do people not read these things? Now they think I hate engrams. For Gods sake, READ MY POST! I HAVE NO ISSUE WITH YOU FINDING ARMOR AND WEAPONS THROUGH ENGRAMS. I'M SIMPLY SUGGESTING THAT THE ENGRAM FARMERS SHOULD STOP SAYING THE GAME IS BROKEN WHEN THEY DON'T GET LEGENDARY GEAR EVERYTIME. THEY SELL LEGENDARY GEAR IN THE TOWER TOO.
EDIT 3: Aaaaaaaand I'm only realizing now that half these people are actually trolls....well I guess I broke my keyboard for nothing...

6 RepliesEven if you maxed out your crucible points last week, and yoru crucible points this week you still don't have enough legendary to get you to lvl 27 (which I'd say is the bare minimum for the raid, and since everyone wants to do the raid, everyone is scrambling for engrams) So, as of now, the ONLY WAY to get to lvl 27 is to have got legendary drops and be lucky enough to have it be for your particular class, and then be in a slow that you hadn't already purchased a legendary for. The odds of these things happening are slim to none. It's beyond frustrating to me that almost every single one of my friends has gotten mutliple legendarys and exotic weapons from random drops in the crucible. I've logged more hours than them, done better than them in strike missions, done better than them in pvp and hte sole legendary item I've got was a pair of boots. People are frustrated because in order to do an event they have been looking forward to, they must win the lottery. that's not fun to me. Doing well should be rewarding, and I'll have to wait till next week to be able to attempt the raid as there is no way I'll be lucky enough to get a legendary helmet. It also frustrates me that for some odd reason the good items are always given to the person on the BOTTOM of the scoreboard. Every single legendary item or exotic I've seen dropped has been to the person on the very bottom. How is that right? With that said, I still love this game. I'm sure at one point my luck will turn around and I'll be the one getting items and they will be getting crap. Within a few weeks I'll be able to attempt the raid myself. Guess I'll just have to be patient.

Tis farming good. If you bring enough encode engrams to the engram master he will eventually give you rare items in return.

9 RepliesThey will farm and farm, get nothing of consequence and then go to the Crucible....GET OWNED ROYALLY, REPEATEDLY and then bash Destiny in the forums. #TheCycle Bungie reads the forums - Engram farming has already been patched. You will get things but it will be mostly garbage but here's an "A" for effort.

Personally I farm engrams (sometimes when i want to do something that take zero effort) so I can pop them. I'm addicted to identifying stuff in rpgs....

1 ReplyAs a level 27 who never had to farm for his Cyptarch level, or for legendary or rare items I find your farming them rather disgusting. Get out of the array area and let the newbs have a hive filled area like they are supposed to.

I agree with the OP, hush up about the cryptarc taking your purple loot or that grinding loot is such a chore. How do you think games like MMO's or this being an MMOFPS keep you playing? By handing out legendaries with upgrade items like food stamps, no. They make it totally random and give shitty drop rates, thereby artificially creating longevity. Its pretty well known across games of this type so please dont act shocked or surprised.

Plus, I don't like to buy things if I can help it in games like this. I enjoy going on patrols and gathering materials, doing public events, and trying to get the engram drops. It's just part of the game that I like best. When I get bored of that I do a strike or two, or three, or ten. It's just a nice change of pace. Then when I get bored of all that I switch to pvp. I just try to break up the monotony of it all. Plus, in patrol it's the only area where we can truly free roam and I find that the best part of the game. I save that for solo play. When my friend is playing we strike. It's akin to scavenging. I just find that to be most enjoyable. It's a post apocalyptic world. Walking around the ruins of the old world is fun. I wrote a post apocalyptic novella and this aspect pleases me the most. I just wish there was more items from the old world scattered about.

Well engrams are cool. But yea most people don't realize u can get crucible and vanguard marks by doing strikes and crucible missions.

farming engrams lets you level cryptarch, which nets you the legendary package each level. this is a very easy way to have a real chance at legendary engrams. I am sorry if this has been said, but aside from the the glimmer/rep it's the obvious reason. everything has a chance to drop engrams though, so to be as efficient as possible, I just make it a point to kill literally everything while doing bounties/rep grinding, strikes, missions etc. I've gotten more purp engrams from level 6 guys on the moon than I have from strikes. standing in the exact same spot mindlessly killing is fine, but you can still have a chance for good drops while going about your business. ya dig?
