Raids: What you need to know

What a raid IS - Very difficult - demands strong teamwork and communication - an investment - extremely time consuming - requires extreme attention and focus - sometimes can be less fun than work What a raid IS NOT - Short - Easy to clear - soloable - carryable (meaning a couple good players can't carry a whole team through) - Something to decide to do on a whim - relaxing What Matchmaking encourages: - Lone wolf mindset - individual focus on individual gain - carrying - Leaving out of frustration or boredom Why Raids should not be matchmade: 10% of the time, maybe, you'll be able to clear a raid without advanced planning. Raids demand thought, planning, strategies, roles to play, extreme focus, and a LOT of time. Raids are not something you decide to do on a saturday because you have nothing else to do. Raids are something that you plan with other people in advance, planning out a strategy, assigning roles, and making sure everyone can communicate clearly. What matchmade raids eventually leads to: Matchmade players complaining about the difficulty of the raid because they tried X number of times and never cleared it. By the nature of matchmaking, there will be far more matchmade raids than there are normal, planned raids. Bungie sees this as the majority of their audience. Bungie decides to nerf raids to satisfy the majority. Raids stop being challenging for who they were designed for, and eliminate the most challenging, hardcore component of the game. Destiny loses replay value, more players will stop playing after the level cap because Raids do not challenge them anymore. If you want Raid matchmaking, that means that you want to play a raid without planning, without a strategy, without knowing who you're playing with beforehand, and out for personal gain. If this is you, you are not raid material. You do not belong in raids, you should not be allowed to raid. Raids are high-level endgame content designed for the players looking for an extreme challenge, not of individual skill, but of teamwork. If K/D is the most important thing to you, you are not raid material. If you're just looking for a few laughs and a good time, you are not raid material. If you think you can carry your team through a raid, you are not raid material. If you're a team player and focused, you ARE raid material. If you're serious about clearing the raid and have hours to spend, you ARE raid material. If you can play a role and stick to what you need to do, you ARE raid material. If you are a casual gamer, raids were not designed for you. That's a simple truth. Stop assuming everything in the game was designed just for you. "There's something in Destiny for everyone" IS NOT "everything in Destiny is accessible to everyone" What people are complaining about would be like if you complained that Recon wasn't immediately available to everyone in Halo 3 (which many of you actually did). Recon was something to be proud of having, and not just anyone could get it. The same thing applies here. Raids are not things that anyone can complete: they're reserved for those with the perseverance to conquer them. They require a lot of effort, which translates in to why they require you to form a team on your own before going in to one. If you can't be bothered to seek out other players looking to do a raid properly, then by all rights, raids demand more effort than you're willing to put in.

Wow, your ego is so freaking huge that you actually came up with half-truths to support your fellow condescending video game elitists on a game that many gamers will stop playing once they get endgame. Matchmaking in raids didn't hurt any major mmorpg nor did it hurt or stop any of the elites static groups or any other hardcore groups because it gave them options if a player had to leave in a middle of a raid and they need to replace him to help finish it or for inspection in which gives you a chance to get the right class with the right gear to balance your team out for that boss fight. Heck some matchmaking tools will help you find how many times a player cleared a raid. Bungie may have their own version of a raid but Destiny Beta lacks some key communication features in the game to really support it.

    • Raids: Why should you care if matchmaking is implemented? If you already have group why are you so friggin worried about it? All of the arguments for no matchmaking are flawed at a basic level.

      • I agree with all of what you said here except for one point. Casual gamers. I consider myself as a casual gamer. But I can quite easily organise four or five hours of my time to game (or raid in this case). If i can do this then anyone can. I detest the idea of MM in Destiny's raids. I can well imagine how difficult they can be without planning, communication and cooperation. This game is mostly PvE co-op with a little PvP added. Bungie's objective is based on that fact. They want to get gamers playing together, talking together and forming groups and communities. A move I welcome, and a move that could change MP gaming for the better. The way I see it, anyone who wants MM for raids is either extremely unsociable, extremely shy or just plain addicted to being an arsehole to anyone online (and a coward). If you are shy, then use Destiny to beat your shyness. If you're unsociable or just an out and out arsehole. Then this game isn't for you.

      • There will be no matchmaking, there will be no splitscreen, and there will be no proximity chat. You people need to get over it. Thank you Bungie for making a game where dipshit people are easily avoided.

          • 1) hype does not equal fact, and all we have at this point is a staged game with a team of 6 people who never played the game prior to being thrust into its hardest content 2) clan and social functions are not in the game. It's been stated time and again that hey are forum only. Considering how few people ever use forums, it's just bad game design and should be corrected either through MM or a decent communication system in game 3) saying things like "you are/aren't raid material" makes you sound like an egotistical tool (not saying you are one). This ruins any chance at having a coherent and civil discussion. 4) raids can't be entered till lvl 25 which is 5 levels past the soft cap and so the chances of running into players who aren't at least decent are greatly reduced.

            • How many posts like this is there? It's simple MM= strike missions, Raids= organized, exp, groups only. If you don't have friends that will be playing this game ( learn to network ). I have all consoles and don't understand how people keep saying comms is an issue to be fixed. I had NO problems chatting with various consoles/ apps. Please people learn to use your tools/ resources before whining about something. It could be that I'm just a beater, but I do read manuals/ instructions before ASSuming it's just going to be giving to me. Maud'Dib

I did solo devils lair strike from the spider tank on set to lvl 8 difficulty. I died once on the spider tank, but that was it. It was hard, but do able. Took a couple hours. I did save the video clips for it! Ended up with 316-ish kills. There's no way I could have done it during the first half of the beta. By the 2nd half I was geared up to the max. The game stats are still viewable on my profile! It was an awesome challenge & wanted to try it again but never had my team mates leave! Raids: That being said I agree with your opinion on raids. The other higher lvl raids will require three to five skilled grinders that play unselfishly. Not ignore the downed team mate letting them re spawn & possibly causing the team to restart the section. I do see a future problem though. Coordinating 6 players to do the larger raids will be one of the hardest feats to pull off! They already said no matchmaking!!! That means finding 3-4 hours free for 5 other players that have the same gaming values as you! My friends list is exactly that! My friends! I rarely add someone that just spams an invite. Playing most FPS on many gens, trying to keep a 3 man team intact for more than an hour is challenging! It will take intense scheduling & this is where a large clan will come in to play! I still think that's a great idea! It should be a reward for the elite grinders! From the other side, they should make an easier one for casual players that also has less rewards. The loot would be more common, and require 3 completions in casual to equal one serious raid. Let's face it, casual gamers out number serious gamers by a LARGE margin! Look at mobage & like companies numbers! Quite staggering! It is impossible to please everyone! But, I feel the balance was near perfect on the alpha & beta! I can't wait to find that magical 6 man fire team that can work together! It may take some crazy amount of time to find that, but that just makes the completion that much sweeter!!

Destiny doesn't need match making for raids. Some type of little text chat that appears at the bottom of the screen with like "global", "raid" ect tabs or one that's accessible from the website/app with those same tabs and restricted to whichever console you have linked to your account for those looking for raid parties. That should solve the issue and help people find others to game with if they really need it.. My opinion though, I don't care either way lol I'm not even thinking about end game yet since the damn game isn't even out on shelves for like another 3 weeks...

                  • I agree completely, people really need to stop having such an attitude of entitlement. No one is equal in this world. No person reaches a goal in the same manner. If you don't have friends to play raids with make FRIENDS.There are plenty of ways to do so. If you don't have time to make friends or coordinate raids in advance then what are you even doing here? Get your priorities straight. It's sad how this generation feels entitled to everything. Learn how to f**king work for what you want instead of sounding like a spoiled b*tch.

                        • Im a hard core gamer. But I realize that others dont play 4- 10 hr at a time like I can..I do most of my fighting with 3 different players but not normally at same times....am I raid ready but dont have 5 hard core gamers to plsy with...the option to go into a raid with less then 6 should be an option. And matchmaking also..... maybe I can't beat it but ill try like hell and have a lot of fun doing it. Match making could help to find that perfect 6 player team to actually complete it.

                            • It's kinda hard to get a raid team without proximity chat in game... right? So how you gonna put a team together if you don't know anyone, especially if you're on a next Gen console? I doubt you will message each individual person In game asking if they wanna do a raid cause honestly by the time youre done messaging everyone, you'll probably be to tired to raid. So unless bungie puts in chat I'm all for matchmaking for raids cause I do not want to message everyone especially if they are randoms. With possibly no mics

Pre-planning won't help if the raid is in territory new to you. Practicing with players you intend to perform a raid with would. Communication, flanking, what kind tactics work best for different environments/enemies.

                                • A very sad elitist attitude !!! Matchmaking is a must for every mode . If you don't need it then don't use it and stop moaning about people who can't get a group together!!! Raids in Destiny are hard and Bungie have said so many times and they offer the best loot. Denying people the chance to play for these items is wrong. I've meet some of the best, most hardcore players on the matchmaking lists of Borderlands 2 over the years and had great fun killing raid boss after raid boss, so your argument about people on these lists not being up for the challenge just doesn't stand up!!

                                  • You listed a bunch of reasons why Raids suck and don't sound fun. It shouldn't feel like work. It should be fun. Instead of locking content out from people who may not be as skilled or who don't have friends the matchmaking SHOULD be there. It's a stupid idea to not include it. It doesn't harm the game in any way. Except the idiot elitists who think it does. Content shouldn't be locked out for people who can't get a group. And a easier mode with lesser rewards should be available for casual gamers or people who want to group with randoms. league of legends is the best example. It has random matchmaking and requires intense communication and teamwork. Matchmaking doesn't harm it.
