In-Game Character Deaths? (Feel Free to Answer, Bungie)

I'm just curious how Bungie will handle character deaths within Destiny. There are several different avenues that I can ponder, but it all depends on several unconfirmed factors. Is there something more to our characters than just being alive? Are they actually aware and their souls somehow collected and re-manifested into existence via the Traveler? Do we control one character in a pool of several other customizable characters to where if one dies they are gone, then replaced by a new blank slate? Are we able to be revived or recovered? Do we lose our gear upon death? What kind of penalty will death incur? How "permanent" are our characters really? Please, share your thoughts and ideas. (Not in any particular order) Timed or Instant Respawn For something as large as Bungie is professing this game world to be, it wouldn't really make sense to have the typical FPS respawn in a random location for every facet of this game. I could see it in the competitive modes, but I always hoped that games would move past this. For myself, it breaks immersion having a carbon copied clone thrown back into battle without explanation of how you came into existence once more. Basically, I'm tired of the same typical FPS respawns throwing you into the middle of a no-win situation and the ridiculousness of it in terms of lore. Will I understand if they use them in some capacity, sure. I am just hoping that it is not the answer to every death, some player choice would be welcome... Something similar to Invasion in Halo: Reach at the minimum. Soul Collection/Re-manifestation I could see something along these lines, similar to how Borderlands has gadgets that recompose dead players for a fee. At least it makes sense as to how your character is back alive once more, all the while taunting you for it. It would make sense to post these devices at key checkpoints, ship landing zones, near centralized locations, or even just exclusively at the lone human city beneath the mighty gaze of the Traveler. Permanent Death? I imagine this method being plausible in certain high-stakes modes if there was a ramped loot/reward system in use. Picture playing the game on Easy and being able to bowl over enemies and complete dungeons without too much conscious thought or effort. The reward for doing so obviously wouldn't be the same as if you had played through on Normal, Heroic, Legendary, or even Mythic. Let's just say there is an option available to you that would increase your chances of finding better loot, but the caveat is that your character can permanently die if not revived in time by other passersby. This brings into question the possibility of character item migration as well. Can we trade items? Can we recover items from our own dead characters? Character Pool/Permanent Death Yet another curious approach would be to allow players multiple "characters" to customize how they choose with all the gear they find throughout games, however a permanent death may be needed. Sharing amongst characters would be essential for this to work. Let's say my character "PipBoy" has a few other alter-ego characters in the pool with lesser gear, but "PipBoy" is my primary raid character. If for some reason he permanently died (respawn cap?) then I would have to distribute whatever was recovered of his gear to my other characters. To be fair, that character's experience gain would need to be divided among the pool or surviving characters so that my character death was not a complete time-investment loss. This way, my character is dead but remnants of his gear remains and his experiences in Destiny are learned instead of forgotten. I believe that is called leaving behind a legacy. Revival This remains to be seen, but I would favor character revival. Maybe I am only too used to the way that Borderlands plays out, but I feel it adds to team play and builds friendship. Who knows, if it is implemented maybe a small reward is automatically given from the revivee to the reviver at the end of the quest? People love incentives like that, but it might also be opening up a mechanic for abuse.

  • yeah itd be cool if you went with a group (or alone) into an instance and the higher the average amount of deaths on your team you would have an increasingly smaller chance at getting the best loot

Permanent Death: This would not at all be fun for me. It would just be stressful. The game wouldn't be as fun. Soul Collection/Re-manifestation: I really don't want to go back and have to do extra work just to get my character revived before I can play the game again. This would just be annoying to most players. Character Pool: I'd rather just have one player that I can focus on. While this is a cool idea, I don't want to spend all this time playing as this character that I've started to love, and then just die and have to start with a new character. I'm not trying to bash your ideas, but I think I would rather just have normal respawning, or something like it. It would make the game less stressful and more fun. And I can still play and focus on my character even if I make a mistake. Of course there should be punishments for dying, but I think Permanent Death is a little extreme. I'm sure Bungie has something good.

If your not working hard on your character, it just won't feel rewarding. Some people rather walk around as some God thoe, but personally i would prefer to earn every step and if there is perma death then that's would bring a level of thrill that the majority wouldn't understand. A comprimise would be a 2 modes, 1 being the perma death hardcore. Softcore can deal with heavy costs to wallets or w/e. Edit/added: Deaths would have to slow the progress down, to many equal respawns or w/e, there really need to be pressure for teamwork, it should be the first real lesson learned for the game. Deaths could perhaps reduce rewards. It just can't be some freaking care bear, hand holding game, players need to feel the weight of failure either being the person who died or part of the team that let a teammate down. If not, the game will just feel empty.

        • Perma-death is not difficult, or hard, it's just stressful. Not fun at all. Many people could beat the game without dying, it's just not fun? I know Bungie would never be this dumb.

I don't know how they will handle it, but I hope whatever they do is a steep penalty for death, it makes a game much more fun for me. Permanent death seems a bit too steep to me though. Perhaps they could make it so death makes you lose all of your held gear and a percentage of your currency, with the ability to find your gear where you died until you die again, something like dark souls or demons souls.

            • As I can imagine their will be quite a few ex/old/current Halo players trying out Destiny, I reckon having a permanent death of your character is slightly excessive. Especially when Destiny is being built up as a social experience rather than a hardcore RPG, in that respect does it really matter if you just respawn?

              • I'm 100% for respawning, but I would also like a little bit of consequence to it. I think you should spawn back at a spaceport or something like that, but that wouldn't make sense if you have a squad. That would ruin the cooperative flow. Instead, I think everyone should have medic capabilities, so this respawn is only a consequence when alone. You should also be able to crawl to safety and call for medical aid or put down waypoints for people to join you. That being said, if you could purchase tactical reinsertion markers at a store, I think that would be a very smart idea. I would load up on those suckers.

                • Can we just have a simple "Press Any Button To Re-spawn" please?

                • Of course there will be some kind of death and respawn mechanic. They will have an in game explanation for this. they wont tell us yet. /thread

                • I think there should be a penalty for death, either by losing finances or gear. I used to think Perma-death was a good idea, but once I experienced it first hand I found it dull and annoying. Yes, there is the pressure and nervousness that makes the game more realistic, but then it hit me: I play video games to have fun and enjoy myself, not to emulate real life. It's good to give players incentive to think strategically, but it should never force them into a style of playing, and that's what Perma-death does.

                • If they had something like an instant re spawn or something similar to the ghost thing we see in in WOW I would be shocked. They are going to have to keep it in lore with the world. If The Traveler can bring people back to live then there really is no threat from the other alien races.

                    • I prefer the idea of character penalisation after death.... Simply put, when you die you are instantly respawned at the same place but lose a percentage of your charcater stats and XP.

                    • I think.. When you die. You should respawn in a hospital, and have to walk around with a cane.. Or a wheelchair Then be able to splatter things with wheelchairs And use your cane as a sword ya.

I Posted this response in a different thread but here it is... Respawning is best! but where, would depend on the size of the map. I think a great idea would be if Players could activate a respawn beacon located on the map at different points (like COD tactical insertion)

                    • Ever play EVE: Online? Well if you haven't, when your character dies, you need to respawn in "clones" you buy with in game money. Maybe Bungie could somehow incorporate a mechanic of buying your respawns rather than just perma death? Maybe like if you ran outta respawns THEN the perma death would come in.

                    • Permanent death is an idea I could never get behind in a game that is marketed toward everyone. That is a very niche idea. And I highly expect that Bungie realizes and understand that. I for one, would not play a game where my character was at stake.
