Discuss all things Destiny 2.

What Happened to the Darkness.

This will be a short one. I know it’s been awhile, but today I want to discuss the pyramid ships and possibly how the collapse ended, why the traveler was so broken, and how the Darkness seemed to just vanish. So recall if you will the ending of Destiny 2. There is an explosion from the Traveler which is presumably light. It goes out into space and eventually hits an enormous fleet of ships that we all know very well. The pyramids ships react to the light wave and “Activate” and begin their long voyage to the source of the light burst, the Traveler. Let’s assume these ships are in fact the “Darkness” from the collapse. (Safe bet, given the opening cutscene) According to the ghost, these ships shouldn’t exist as they were destroyed by the “Traveler’s sacrifice”. The ending scene disproves the ghost’s claims. Or does it? (Pocket that for later) So we’re left with a question. What did happen? Well, let’s review some cosmic history. The Darkness has been hounding down the traveler for literal ages. The Darkness caught the Traveler’s scent and chased it throughout the universe. Many civilizations fell. Eventually, the war came to us. When the Darkness eventually arrived and drove us to the edge of extinction, the Traveler lit up and poof, the Darkness was gone. I believe what may have happened is the Traveler pulled an Eris and teleported the darkness as far away as it possibly could. Given the size of that fleet and the distance it was in the last cutscene, it makes sense the Traveler fell into a weird god, coma, death, state, thing…… Anyway, with the distance the Darkness got teleported, along with the traveler’s extremely reduced activity, the Darkness more than likely lost the light’s trail and went dormant ever since. It may have even believed the Traveler was entirely destroyed. Now, the light burst gave the Darkness the light’s scent again. Slowly, it will make its way back to our galaxy, then eventually, our system. (Eventually. Like, I’m pretty sure the Darkness is further out than the Reapers were in mass effect 2.) Sadly, I don’t really have any grimoire or lore entries to give this major backing, but I still think it may be plausible. Now, get that “Or does it?” out of your pocket, I’m about to use it. There may also be an alternative. The Traveler may have actually destroyed the Darkness that was here. But then how is that fleet still there? The fleet that attacked may have just been half of the true fleet, or even a just small detachment. However, I find this position to be a little less likely because one would assume the detachment fleet would have uploaded the last known location of the Traveler and the True fleet would have been mobilized long before the light burst. So let’s hear what you have to say. Did the Traveler juke the Darkness or did it really (But not really) destroy it? Or do you think something else happened? Hope I got your theory engine going. • Still not convinced those ships are directly The Darkness. The Darkness/Deep has been called the formless one. For example from the 'Grasp of Eir'
At the beginning, they stood in thrall of the Formless One, and they offered themselves to its depth.
or Worm God's Boon
They had a choice. They chose the hunger. They chose the Formless One. They chose the Worm Gods.
Calus also seems to have encountered this formless one, 'a nothingness' he encounters at the edge of the Universe.
At the edge of the universe, I stared into the infinite deep. It stared back, and was pleased. I would become the herald of its victory, and bear witness for all creation.
We also have the Leviathan of Fundament that tells us
++We live on the edge of a war— —a war between Formless and Form++ ++between the Deep and the Sky—
Rasputin does not refer to the force that he encountered as a fleet of ships, his term for the Darkness is IT and also Queen of Final Shapes. There is also the anomaly that was detected by Titan scientists, which appears to be around the time the Traveler left Io and just before they started to evacuate Titan.
Send a deep-space probe toward the anomaly. I want to know what it is.
—Dr. Shanice Pell

    • Well just to back this up to any people who believe its savathun or the nine or some other -blam!- thing, we now know the darkness is a entity (as told by the kairos function cloak lore and the osiris comic). Anyway we know that the darkness has always been chasing the traveler so the ending scene may imply that is the darkness itself. I honestly think we will find out when destiny 3 comes out because fighting the darkness is no expansion that is a game in itself.

        • What happened to the Darkness? Pay another $80 - 100 in Y5 and we might get a chance to find out more about the Darkness and Toland, the Shattered. And a return of his favorite exotic pulse rifle, "The Bad Juju". But for this time being let's talk about new exciting things Eververse got in store and all the future possibility of items she might bring to us.

The opening scene said the Traveler destroyed it's enemy. It never said it destroyed all of it's enemy. The form of the suggested ships from the opening recalls clearly the ships from the campaign end, and brings up a very valid point: the agents of this particular segment of the Darkness can only detect and pursue the Traveler when it is active and taking action on something. Thus, in sacrificing itself, it not only gave us the ghosts, but protected itself and us from being detected by it's pursuers. The reactivation of the Traveler signifies a few things. First, the Darkness' agents can actively find it again. Second, that even if the original enemy was destroyed entirely, the Darkness has influenced another agent to recreate it's previous form. And third, the Traveler knows that by reactivating, it lights a beacon for the Darkness' old agents. But it also believes that it and ourselves together are finally prepared to face it. We probably could have beaten the enhanced dominar on our own; we managed to do for Oryx. But the Traveler chose to take a role, and in doing so, signaled that it believes we are ready to face what's truly out there.

          • Nice post. However, sadly, it appears Bungie has no clue what they are doing story wise and is a large part of the reason all of the D1 lore "disappeared". I truly feel Bungie has no real idea what to do for a cohesive story. All of the original writers are long gone. The few snippets available in D2 are not very good and show Bungie has tried to pull away from telling an actual story with their game.

          • They said that this game will very much be about the light, us, and our ghost. As for the darkness I imagine that we will not face this enemy until the last game as a sort of final boss of Destiny.

Bungie is incapable of making a coherent story. Year one they gave us scraps with no way of piecing it's scattered remains back together. Now they went to the other extreme giving us expensive cinematics with nonstop cheesy adorations whilst STILL never forming the story base that the whole thing is SUPPOSSED to be built on. THEY don't know what the darkness is any more than we do. Destiny 2 is Like the second Star wars Trilogy, the blanks are filled in with great liberties and a thick layer of cheese offering more questions than answers.
