The Fact that there are People are starting to Pay for "DDoS" is very alarming and needs action taken. Ft. Reddit

Original Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/5a6420/there_are_people_offering_paid_ddos_trials/ Made by NovaHands (Long Post inbound) This is a start to a Potential Huge Issue that hasn't been addressed and if so, hasn't been enforced enough. DDosing has been a huge trend in Trials and needs to be stopped. The problem is, its very easy to do with no limit. With this game being on a Peer-to-Peer connection, it is very easy to obtain people's I.P addresses. From there, people spam those addresses with data until they get disconnected. The Solution would be to have dedicated servers. However, it may take too long, and a great possibility that they'll be in Destiny 2. To be exact on what DDosing is: "DDoS is short for Distributed Denial of Service. DDoS is a type of DOS attack where multiple compromised systems, which are often infected with a Trojan, are used to target a single system causing a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. Victims of a DDoS attack consist of both the end targeted system and all systems maliciously used and controlled by the hacker in the distributed attack. According to eSecurityPlanet.com, in a DDoS attack, the incoming traffic flooding the victim originates from many different sources – potentially hundreds of thousands or more. This effectively makes it impossible to stop the attack simply by blocking a single IP address; plus, it is very difficult to distinguish legitimate user traffic from attack traffic when spread across so many points of origin. A Denial of Service (DoS) attack is different from a DDoS attack. The DoS attack typically uses one computer and one Internet connection to flood a targeted system or resource. The DDoS attack uses multiple computers and Internet connections to flood the targeted resource. DDoS attacks are often global attacks, distributed via botnets." -Webopedia (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/DDoS_attack.html) (no plagiarism intended) The solution would be restrictions and bans to those people. But that won't stop more people from doing it. The solution would be to stop it at its source but if that's not possible, then we need Dedicated Servers. That way, it can be strong enough to not be breached by DoS/DDos attacks. I know we ask this a lot Bungie, but 2017 is coming. Technology is advancing, internet is getting faster and more expensive for some providers. You can't always blame us for disconnects that happen when it isn't out Internet Provider's fault. That is why I ask for you to possibly establish Deddicated Servers and if not, then please have them for Destiny 2 or any other Bungie Product you make that requires online permission. TL:DR -People are paying for DDos Trials -We need Dedicated Servers. -DDos is when someone "uses one computer and one Internet connection to flood a targeted system or resource. The DDoS attack uses multiple computers and Internet connections to flood the targeted resource." -You can get in a lot of trouble with FBI. -If you have to DDos to go flawless, then you have no pride and need to get good. I'm tired of losers like you. ESPECIALLY if you have to ask for other people to pay you.

  • Here is a list of games you can currently be DoS'd offline in: Destiny. Here is a list of games where you don't have to worry about being DoS'd: All other games. Gg Bungie. You're #1 at something again.

          • He was banned from destiny. I followed their reporting instructions on bungie.net and reported cheaters. They haven't been online in destiny since a bit after the report. I had video, link to the game stats, and in game reported them.

            • As stated below, if you are connecting to anything online, you can be Dos'd or DDos'd off of it. The only thing the attacker needs, other than the right setup to execute, is the IP address of your machine or your modem / router / ISP node. By setting up dedicated servers, you are helping obscure that information from attackers, but it's still possible, most likely even simple, to get it. Once that's known, you're done; the dedicated server can't and won't shield your box, modem, or ISP hub from getting blasted. It's just an annoyance; someone's already breaking federal law to do this, what's a little more work to keep making easy cash? I think dedicated servers are a great idea for game stability and performance, and have immediate benefits. But I think we need to be real and understand that it's not going to stop professional DDoSers from booting anyone. It might make it harder, until someone figures out how to snoop your IP, writes a little utility to do it, and them distributes it all over the place. I'd rather see a securely encrypted connection tunnel to the servers and peers that makes it a lot harder to target me, personally. Cheaper, faster to implement, and more secure in the long-run. One patch, and done.

            • Cheats need to be named and shamed. Month ban from the element caught cheating in also. Cheat on trials = one month ban Second offense = three month crucible ban Third = perma ban To many people who pactice and play fairly are screwed because of cheats and hackers. Tougher enforcing is imperative.

It is also a federal felony. For those who don't know. "Felony" is the bad kind of crime that means you go to prison and the only pvp you'll be playing is rift with the soap in the shower. It is troubling that Bungie is not only allowing criminal behavior but actively encouraging it. Seriously bungie. Call your lawyers. Your exposure on this is huge and I'm not exaggerating when I say people on your own team could potentially be implicated. Especially with your efforts to ban people for identifying criminals by name. It could be defined as conspiracy to conceal criminal acts which makes you accessory after the fact. Accessory after the fact is defined as: Someone (bugnie) who assists another (the ddos user) 1) who has committed a felony (ddos attack), 2) after the person has committed the felony (or in your case, before, because you're allowing people to post adds for it on your forums), 3) with knowledge that the person committed the felony (which you have been provided by players and your network statistics, and you have been further provided knowledge that this IS a felony by this and other posts), and 4) with the intent to help the person avoid arrest or punishment (by intimidating people who would report the crime into silence). An accessory after the fact may be held liable for, inter alia, obstruction of justice. It isn't enough to just hit people with the ban hammer. If you know it's going on, you have to actually do something. If you know criminal behavior is ongoing you have to report it. This is further complicated by the fact that you are "accessory" because of personal profit which does indicate conspiracy because you are failing to report criminal activity to the appropriate authorities for fear of losing players, ie profit. This. Is. A. Problem. I again advise you to contact your legal department and discuss your exposure. You may find it to be a lot greater than you think.

              • The fact is, Bungie gets massive exposure through streamers. Those streamers break BOTH Bungie and Activision ToS by offering flawless runs for money. So in turn, if Bungie won't enforce their own ToS, as well as their supporting company, why would they give a squirt if people Ddos other consoles? If it has no effect on Bungies bottom line, no shits will be given.

                • The problem is, is how do we know they're the people advertising? Could be a disgruntled person posting as them since, unlike destinylfg.net, you don't have a locked username and anyone can post as anyone. Don't believe me? If so, I can always post as you and advertise the same thing to prove it....

                • That'll solve the immefiate issue of ddos attacks but not the overall issue of lag. Dedicated servers have to be located somewhere and good -blam!-ing luck if you live in another hemisphere. Sure, your connection will be more consistent. But it will be consistently bad and entirely dependent on how far you are from those servers. If you live in California, USA, then you're in luck! You'll get little to no lag. But the farther away yu live, the more -blam!-ed you're going to be. I live in the East Coast and I'd likely be screwed. Our friends across the pond would never even be seen again in Destiny.

                  • it's is really expensive to have local dedicated servers, what about having trained professionals monitor matches? actually be there in spectating view? it would work not only as a deterrent but as a enforcement. figure that would be cheaper then servers and also see first hand what a computerized detection might not pick up

Now that more people are starting to feel the pain, all of the sudden its a different tune? haha The DoS BS has been around for over a year. Almost every post that brought it up was widely panned as idiotic irrational whining. I remember long posts explaining how DoS attacks would never be used just to win at Trials. But now its more widespread and you are all screaming. You deserve this. Bungie deserves this. Destiny PvP is crap and always has been. You all love to hate it, but its hooks are deep in you because of the loot ladder and the RNG for OP "balance." I was vaccinated early (WoW survivor), so I am not really feeling it with Destiny. The only reason I played this game is because everyone else did. Not so much the case anymore.
