How a weapon crafting system could work in Destiny: (An concept from a consumer/novice game designer)

I could see this system working and wanting it in.

90

I like it but it needs some tweaking.

35

I am indifferent to this system.

12

I would not like to see this system ever come in.

33

As many of of you may or may not know (prolly' the latter, since while I am trying to be more active and voice and share my opinions about the game in a constructive manner, but there is only so much time in a day while you are job-hunting.) I think Destiny could be much improved if the gave more choice to player's to offset the rather suffocating RNG. (If you'd like to see my thoughts on that, you can look at this post I made from a over month ago: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/183587960/0/0 ) One of the concepts I have thought about that I believe would improve my (and possibly others) experience and feeling of choice and meaningful input would be some sort of weapon crafting system. Before I go on (Disclaimer), let me just state that I know Destiny is not a "true MMO' but a shared world shooter However, many of it's systems and mechanics seem to be trying to mimic an MMO, but just aren't quite fully fleshed out, in my humble opinion. I know I haven't been in the game design business for as long as the devs in BUNGIE, but as both a player of games of all types (including MMO's) and as a someone who has his degree in Game Design & Development (Not trying to brag or flaunt my diploma about, I am just hoping it will give me some credit as I am trying to break into this very competitive field and using my accumulated skills for a game I see having incredible potential.) I feel I should conceptualize possible systems and feedback that could be beneficial to the game. Granted, I could be way over my head and my ideas might not be as well thought out as I think they are, but that is why I am posting them on a public forum for feedback, eh? Anywho, I've digressed long enough. Let's get to the concept at hand. How could a weapon crafting/forging system work in Destiny? I've given it some thought and this is how I could see it be broken down into this step-by-step system: Rarity
I think these custom, user-built guns would need to be in their own rarity tier somewhere between Legendary and Exotic. I am thinking a reddish colored rarity called something like 'Custom' or 'Designer'.
- Weapon Class/Type
The first step and the most simple to creating your very own weapon in Destiny, you gotta pick what kinda gun you wanna make. Players get a selection every type of Primary, Special, and Heavy weapon class (perhaps barring swords.)
- Archetype/Foundry/Frame
After picking their weapon type of choice to forge, the next thing the player must do is pick from the archetypes/frames/foundry available to that weapon type. Say I choose to make an Auto Rifle, that means I can choose from Hakke, SUROS, and other frames which haven't been associated with Foundry type yet (You still have Crux/LOMAR, Nadir, Cassoid, Daito, and Tex Mechanica that don't have guns officially tied to their brand with the exceptions of some Exotics). The perks available can be tied to type of Frame/Archetype the player picked and can roll for certain perks upon forging it.
- Elements
This may only apply to Special and Heavy weapons depending on whether or not you decide to bring back Elemental Primaries, but this part comes by allowing the player to have their crafted weapon in question do elemental damage at the cost of some planetary materials. Helium Filaments for Solar Damage, Spinmetal for Arc Damage, and Relic Iron for Void Damage.
-Shaders/Skins/Decals
But once you have frame of the gun set, what is to separate from those you'd find in the field? This is where weapon shaders/skins/decals could come in. Using the shaders we use for our armor or creating some shaders/decals/skins specifically for the customization of these user-created guns. Want a black SUROS Pulse Rifle? An orange Omolon Handcanon? These shaders would help with that.
- Name
Obviously, a user created gun needs a user created name. You may want to impose a reasonable character limit here (Maybe 50 characters max?) and I'm sure they'll have to be some filters to make it T for Teen.
-Tagline
A little description or quip about the gun, much like those you find in the game. The character limit here can be longer and you'll need the T for Teen filters here too I am guessing.
Building Your Gun
After you've picked weapon type, a frame, element, a name, and tagline, it's time to pool your resources and build the gun you've made. I imagine the cost will be a certain amount of Glimmer, weapon parts, motes of Light, and/or Legendary Marks. Included in this would also be the planetary materials if you wanted your gun to do elemental damage. As for what Light Level it is created at it, I think the scaling should go like so: Say I am Light Level 304, then the gun builds at a Light Level of 300. However, if I am a Light Level of 305, then the gun builds at a Light Level of 310.
and there you have it, how I see Destiny having a weapon-crafting system in place. Obviously there would need to some sort of Kiosk or crafting table in the game to get the whole thing going but that's the jist of the concept. So what does everyone here think of this? Sound like something you'd like to see in the game? As always, I look forward to feedback from the community and thank you for reading this in advance!

    • The idea is good, but making exotics out of scratch sounds a little tedious. It'll be better if bungie made 50- 200 unique craft able weapons, all legendary, with great perks. To make a random weapon, you would bee to gather at least one ascendant shard, radiant shard, moldering shard and a random material ( relic iron, spin metal etc) That gun will be unique in its own way

        • It's a great idea, but each weapon should come with tokens, and these tokens buy perks. To stop every player picking a God Roll, perks are rated on how good they are and so better perks cost more tokens.

                • You're ideas are great.....for PvE. The problem is the same one re-forging had. Destiny is also a competitive shooter...so even slight differences in weapon power can create significant competitive advantages. So people will attempt to craft the most POWERFUL version of the weapons possible. So, unless you make a crafting system extremely expensive and extremely time-consuming. It will cause serious balance problems in PvP.

great Idea and makes sense seeing as majority of other online MMO games have some kind of weapon crafting system, and although I personally do not think destiny should be considered MMO it claims to take elements from it. I believe any crafted weapon should take the exotic slot however and obviously require certain items to make it possible obtainable from various enemies/missions in game. For those who have played fallout 4 I like the customisation of the weapons and I believe that some traits could be borrowed, for example changing of the grip could effect stability and handling, changes to breach could effect fire rate and reload speed and changes to barrel could effect range and impact. then obvious scope changes etc, all should be visually depicted on the weapon. Also I think exotics should have a slim chance to drop an item to pass along a currently existing exotic trait, this could only drop from 310 + exotics and like I said only have a chance to drop (1 in 5 or 1 in 10) so that everybody isnt running around with a full auto high impact chain lightning (or similar op weapon) primary.

                      • I love this idea. Bungie should too it would give players a reason to go on patrol and farm materials. I would suggest that the annount of materials needed shouldn't be a crazy huge amount. That way you could farm or even purchase the materials needed if you didn't feel like grinding. I think you should post this idea in the destiny Reddit. Apparently ideas have a way better chance if being seen by the devs there. Well good luck I hope this is something taken into serious consideration.

                        • I'm thinking it might need a slight limit or possibly a difficult item to obtain to begin crafting your own gun, seeing how special they are. Maybe something like the dalvin relics, which you then would take to the Gunsmith and craft a gun. You could also have a kiosk like place for designs that you don't have the materials for. I over all really do like your idea, and hope Cozmo or Deej, at least see it! :)

                          • We have people on here crying about weapon reforging because they don't want to actually play the game and get drops. Co you imagine grinding mats for a week, spamming guns and not getting the perks they want? They will cry super hard on the forums and get it taken away. I played a mmo for 5 years. (I did this many times) Spent a whole month getting a material, made 300 of one weapon over an entire weekend only to not make the master grade (200%+ stats and doesn't expire) or perfect grade (250%+ stats and doesn't expire) but only making high grades (150%-199% stats and expires). It didn't make me go on their forums and cry or nothing but look at people crying about reforge. I spent way more time on that game grinding and fighting RNG but players here get it easy as they don't need to gather materials to make their gear and yet they still cry. I like your idea but in all honesty, Destiny player base has trouble with the easy grind as it is. MMO style of grind will bring out the infant in many more players.

                                • I prefer the idea of bringing back re rolling, but limited. One re roll per weapon, costing a glass needle or something. I keep getting weapons with you the worst possible rolls, and would like a second chance( but no more).

that system brings a lot of problems -everybody only will have the best god rolls then -god rolls stronger than the conspirancy theorie d from the NF quest -balancing then works only in adjusting perks or exchanging perks -needed new armor perks or armor crafting system too compensate so much god rolls etc. -balancing between legandary exotics and designer weapons are very hard now generally a good idea but every coin has two sides

                                    • I would also add a 'socket' system. It would be great of 'perk engrams' could drop and you could insert them into empty perk sockets in weapons. Many RPGs have this kind of system and it would allow us to customize our favorite weapons in an additional way.

                                          • Firstly, I have a concern for putting this in a tier between exotic and legendary. If this were the case, then everyone would exclusively use custom made guns as they would be better than the legendaries that everyone already uses. This would drastically reduce the weapon load outs and create a less diverse game. Imagine if everyone got the ability to craft a perfect hawksaw (back when pulses were king). Wouldn't this ruin the viability of using weapons besides the hawksaw? This essentially lets every player have the best or second best weapon in the game guaranteed. This doesn't just help alleviate RNG, it destroys it. What's the point of raiding or going flawless in ToO if the best weapon is craftable? I think putting this as a tier better than rare but worse than legendary would allow people who aren't getting the drops for a specific weapon to still be competitive without threatening the weapon economy. This still alleviates RNG without destroying it. Also, there was no discussion on how perks would work in the original post. Would the crafter pick or are they random according to archetype?
