A possible (good) solution to the lack of a REAL voice chat system?

Great Idea!

I'm undecided.

Not a good idea.

So, this concept is a bit of a collective brainstorming idea from a conversation in another thread between CaptainThumbs and myself. It’s obvious the lack of voice chat functionality is a problem, especially in what the developers have termed a "social" game. I propose the game runs 2 independent voice chat channels simultaneously. This allows players to customise as desired, while remaining highly functional. It would obviously have to work slightly differently across the modes but this is the most consistent solution we come up with; Tower/Explore/PvP Deathmatch:
In the form of either a proximity or zone based chat for tower/explore. However, you should still remain in contact with your fire team members regardless of their location, as if you have radio contact. Another interesting idea was the concept of bringing up your ghost when you wish to communicate with others, opening the channel and allowing you to transmit to anyone with the channel enabled within that zone of the map, this would avoid you running past someone blasting music with their mic turned on, or just stumbling across someone talking to their friends while they try and wind down and relax. This gives the ghost more functionality at the same time, is simple yet still allows the opportunity to ask for help in a public event, or just try and show someone something cool you find without everyone talking over one another.
Team-Based PVP/Mission/Strike/Raid:
Have a team channel for these modes where the team can always hear each other. This would be a fairly realistic concept, since IRL you wouldn't enter into a situation like it without something comparable to radio contact. This would increase team cohesion and since you all share a common goal, should be given the best possible chance at succeeding. Possibly allow fireteam leaders to set fireteam wide channel preferences, so you can't have one guy in a fireteam with it on with it on answering the other FT members while they have it switched off, leading to confusion for the rest of the team.
This would also require some sort of functionality to stop the experience from being ruined:
- Perhaps a mute feature, maybe with a console stored database of some sort which tracks muted players bungie IDs and can automatically mutes in future, so you don’t find yourself constantly muting the same player over and over. - Perhaps an expansion of the report system, which strips nuisance players of voice chat privileges globally for a time period once a certain number of reports are received within a set time frame. Though this solution is potentially open to abuse I guess. - A combination of the two so you can report and mute if necessary, this could prevent affording that person the opportunity to ruin someone elses experience too.
Any type of voice functionality regardless of the number of people which require muting is a step up in contrast to what we were given in beta. This idea gives people a gentle nudge to encourage them to be social and work together rather than being forced to do so, or alternatively putting up a clunky brick wall and requiring fire team invites and such which was the poorly implemented beta solution. On a side note:
Another type of system which could be beneficial in game, would be some form of dynamic public fire team system, allowing you to just join a public fire team if you're not in one already, or yours is not full, this could work slightly similar to the squad system in battlefield games i guess, but could also make explore mode a lot more fun for people that are currently just flying solo. Maybe just a simple button in a menu which joins the public fire team, this would give players opportunity to involve themselves more closely with one another (which is more social, this was the base concept of the game to begin with wasn't it?)
If you have any actual intelligent feedback, or have any other interesting ideas, feel free to post them. If you are opposed to the idea please mention why. If you just don’t understand what I meant, feel free to post on the thread or message me personally and I will do my best to explain. Also, If you vote yes please like my post. EDITS: Bold Text & Typo Corrections, Condensed the wall of text a bit.

    • The Ghost menu is where chat features should be at. The Ghost would be your translator per se. It could open and close the chatline. Apply psych profiles to the world allowing only those that meet the criteria to communicate. A visual cue in The Tower allowing other players to know that your mic is on and your chatting, or that your seeking a fire team. A glow would be most do-able but I would love a little r2d2 antenna to pop out its head.
I'm a dreamer
• I don't understand what is wrong with how it worked in the beta. We had Fireteam chat and that was great. I didn't have to hear a bunch of voices talking at the same time, I could talk to the person I was teamed with and, it was in surround. The only game I've played where you could hear everyone was GTAO and it was/is awful. God forbid a girl jumps in then there's 9 kids all asking for her instagram/facebook/kik/whatever. Yea, I know there's settings to only hear friends/crew members; didn't make it any less annoying. Still had to change it every time I played. I liked that it was an 'opt in' rather than an 'opt out.' It was cool how when the other player got farther away their voice became more distant too(I think the idea of it being more like walkie-talkies would be cool in Crucible but otherwise no). This, I think, encourages players to stick together and work together; I like that. There was a setting to make your Fireteam public/invite only/friends only; I think that covers your idea about public Fireteams. I had mine set to public and would get requests from other players that wanted to join. And there were times that I was invited to join other Fireteams. I've seen a bunch of posts/threads wanting public chat and I, for one, don't. I don't know what it's like in any of the games Destiny has been compared to because I've never played them(CoD, Borderlands, Halo, etc.). I know that I liked everything about playing the Destiny Beta and, until I get my hands on the full game, I can't name one thing I'd want changed.

          • Its a social game, Bungie called it a "shared world shooter" but its awful hard to share anything when you can't even talk to each other. The fire team only chat cripples the social elements of the game, its clunky and difficult to use on the fly. More often then not partying up just to chat was more work then its worth. I'd love a chat system that let me find people to play with in the tower, or to coordinate during a public event, to work together in PvP, or just strike up a friendly chat over an encounter or the gear you have. Small things like this go a long way to building this "shared world" we're looking forward to.

          • If I may chime in, the two channels can be a possibility. Of course the ghost would have to be changed to allow you to run while it's out. Now, I've thought of proxy chat and how it may affect people in general. The biggest issue is the people who may abuse this. While proximity chat only allows you to hear people within a few meters of yourself, that doesn't stop the brats who like to run up to everyone they see and yell into the mic. That's where a "Timeout" feature may be appropriate. Once a person is muted by a predetermined number of people in a short amount of time, that person will be muted for everyone for about 10 minutes, give or take. Once his "Timeout" is over he will be unmuted again. TL;DR- I like the idea of chat channels. I would like to add a "Timeout" feature for proximity chat.

            • I think why they didn't add a chat function is because they kinda expect you to have a fire team to play with.

              • I think many problems would go away if it was just easier to join a fireteam. It took me a while to realize that you weren't actually in a team with you partners in Strikes or Crucible. And on the other end, you end up soloing story unless you create a fireteam beforehand. It seems like the whole fireteam thing could use a redesign so it becomes smoother and more integrated.

                • Great idea on the ghost thing. It could be like making a phone call with your ghost. The only problem i see is if randoms can join your fireteam your gonna get kicked into orbit repeatedly.

                      • I like it. A sort of Walkie Talkie feel to the chat. Could be fun, although annoying in the lobby if a bunch of people just sit with their Stuff up and talk.

                      • My two cents. I believe in options and realism. If you choose between letting your microphone in the game (make voice or sound detectable by enemies) local chat in game, or select out of game chat channel for private or public voice chat while you play. Eventually add video chat for out of game while you play the game. But how much server and bandwidth does any of it use? By the way, there are cellphones and unlimited minutes. Wow! Make all communication in the app over phone network.

                          • I wouldn't mind the channels. Bring up your ghost and join Tower Chat to maybe ask players if they want to do a strike mission or something. Same goes for explore mode, jump in the explore chat and people can call out public events etc.

                          • I got bored of reading so stopped lol. Simple solution is just give players the options, done. Prox on/off Strike chat on/off PvP chat on/off Then have the standard mute feature for when needed. Done.

This post is kind of text heavy, but I agree with the gist of it. Having these: 1. Chat channels with a toggle feature 2. A fast, efficient way to mute/block/avoid players would greatly improve communication and social aspects within the game. [Edit]Also, I'd be repeating myself for the third time, but would be happy to see text chat with the same functionalities.

                                  • I like your ghost idea, saw your other thread. It would work well as a invite to voice. Whip out your ghost. They whip theirs out ( their ghost you pervs ) and you start a conversation. Others could join by doing the same. Fast simple comm. Fire-teams need to communicate in everything that's a fact. So any good comm. is better then none or some . Reporting abusers is tuff. Bungie would have to keep a record of reports for each player. Investigate, question, ban if needed. I never played Battlefield ( I have 4 in the box still ) so I don't know how joining a group worked in it. I posted/commented on a place to post LFGs or my own wants for a party in the tower. A party finder. Would love to see that. The game has some serious potential. If it pans out, I stay on and enjoy. If not, I bail for the next big game. I hope for the best. Good luck.
