Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Rebuild movies

What are your guys thoughts on the original Evangelion series (+ EoE)? What about the Rebuild movies? I'm not a 'massive fan' of Evangelion, but I liked the original series. Some episodes were rather dull (that one microscopic angel was retarded) but some of it was good. Definitely a good series, but it's not one of my favourites or anything. The rebuild movies are kinda meh. I absolutely loved 1.0; seeing the first episodes of the original series reanimated with much better fight scenes (Ramiel looked -blam!-ing awesome) was quite cool, and I actually prefer the first rebuild movie to the first episodes of the original. I didn't really like the 2.0. I didn't like what they changed, like Asuka replacing Toji as the fourth child. I felt that scene was done much better in the original series. The fight scenes were still pretty amazing, though; especially this scene. 3.0 was meh. It started off sorta cool but I honestly didn't really like it that much. I still have hope that 4.0 will be good. The ending has alot of potential, considering all the hints that the Rebuild movies are actually a sequel to the original series. Along with the pic attached to my post, there is also this one. So hopefully 4.0 will redeem the rebuild series somehow. So, what do you guys think of the NGE and the Rebuild movies?

    • Considering the fact that I watched NGE too long ago to remember everything about it and that I'm waiting to see 3.33 dubbed on toonami I will not partake in this discussion. But uh 2.22 totally ripped off spiral power at the end.

      • Evangelion is by far my favorite anime of all time. I just recently rewatched the original series and EoE and I'm always so happy with everything about it. I absolutely adore the work put into the new Rebuild movies, but I have to say, unless they pull something crazy awesome with the last part, I'm not sure if I will like it as a whole. I think the only thing that could save it would be if it does in fact turn out to be a crazy twisty time loop thing, but from all I understand that doesn't seem to make much sense...

      • I personally prefer the Rebuilds over the original (at least, from what I've seen so far, as I've yet to se 3.33), simply because the Angel fights are some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen (especially 2.22, dear gods, was that awesome) and it's a little bit more to the point. That's no detriment to the original series, of course. Neon Genesis Evangelion was and still is something that anime should strive to be. The fact that it can juggle and develop the psyches of so many characters in the span of 26 (28 counting The End of Evangelion) episodes as well as it did is something to be admired. On the downside of the original, however, is the massive shortcuts it took in the animation. Need I remind you of the scenes where the characters just stood there? Doing nothing? For two minutes straight? Yeah, scenes like those, and scenes that pointedly avoided showing any movement, including the movement of the characters' mouths, were massive shortcuts in the animation due to budget constraints. Of course, when the animation needs to be good, it's great, but those scenes were just... ugh. The manga is great. It's more or less the original series with a few divergences (from what I've read, anyhow).

        • I like both the original series and the Rebuilds. The original series is painfully old, and it looks it's age. It's not even widescreen. But it's still a classic, and I respect that. All the angel battles were really cool, and the sci-fi/mystery/psychological elements to it were awesome. I had no idea what was going on half the time when I first watched it, but I enjoyed it. I like the Rebuilds until the third movie. The first two were really awesome, I enjoyed them. It's still EVA, but shorter, so it's less time than watching the whole series again. The animation and CGI in the series were well done. The animation budget was really high. There were some changes in the first two, but nothing I was raging at as a fan of the original series. I really liked the last sequence of 2.22. But then 3.33 happened, and nothing made any sense anymore. Just about everything was unexplained, and it completely lost that "Eva" feel to me. It was all about f***ing with Shinji's head, there was no deeper character evaluating among the rest of the cast like in the original series. Those trains scenes were well associated with the Eva Franchise, and that was just gone from the latest movie. I really hope the last movie can salvage the Rebuilds, but I did not like 3.33. Also, read the manga, if you haven't. It closely follows the original series, but with some slight and major differences. Good differences that I actually prefer to the original. It explains things a lot better than the anime, and Shinji isn't a complete bitch 100% of the time.
