It's not really a crutch, just a backup plan in case you get in a sticky situation. But some people (like me) prefer the sunsinger class and its an added perk considering nothing else is really that great in that column.

You should try the others more often. Song of Flame turns your entire team into a grenade machine and Radiant Skin makes you almost unkillable for a good period of time. And you can use both of these supers as often as you want - there's no need to save them in case you might die.
