Seriously, I've seen this happen a couple of times. I always dread when someone joins at the last minute.
Anyway, my most annoying experiences are always during nightfalls. Getting 5 strange coins or useless ascendant materials is brutal. Especially when the other people get exotics. Also, this hasn't happened to me yet, but I dread getting three energies from a Crota kill. Why's this stuff even allowed?

I can personally say that you sir/lady are correct I did a strike 2 man and a guy joins as we kill the boss we both had 100+ kills he had 0 and he got a legendary engram ....but here's the kicker I stay in the Playlist and I get put in the same situation as the other guy I get into the game get 5 kills and boom after match rewards ? That's right legendary engram.....in short...this games loot system is super broken.
