Instead of just adding simple upgrade to current equipment, they create a knew upgrade tree with exotic shards because they need to create a new faux market for strange coins. And what are motes of light good for now, sure glad I didn't save up 50 or 60 of those. And lets eliminate using all those resources (we accumulated during grinding) from being used as vanguard or cruxible marks.
