I am impressed and intrigued by the current developments in Thorium Reactors which eliminate many of the downsides of Uranium/Plutonium fission (meltdown, waste, cooling, size, etc) and could easily provide power for a village or sectors of a town/small city. Though it is proven that both fission power and airline travel are many times safer and less impactful than other methods of power-generation/transportation, there are still risks and when an incident with them happens, it is going to be high-profile and strike people emotionally. Even though the alternatives (coal, oil, even solar for power and automobiles for travel) cause more pollution per mile/kwh and cause more loss of life per mile/kwh.
