This is an absolutely amazing idea. They could have old guns like a magnum (would be a hand cannon), an M16 (pulse rifle), or many other guns. The could look like modern guns but the give them a futuristic twist. Say you got an Ak-47 you would know it is that gun because of how it looks but it would be slightly different with a few future modifications.

My thinking would be having a M16 be an Auto Rifle, and AN-94 being a Pulse Rifle, and a Desert Eagle being a Hand Cannon. And like you said about the gun looking like the gun it's based off, but with design differences (like if a Desert Eagle hand cannon had Golden Wings on the sides of it)
