True, everyone saying that humans made Exo's. But to be honest humans were not able to terraform any planet before they found the traveler. So i believe that Exo's were made with the technology of the traveler just like the ghosts were. So them having there own AI and extremely advance defense networks to protect them from all unknown viruses, temperatures, etc. etc. and most than likely extremely long life span is more than likely the case on how they came to be into existence.
And Exo's were specifically designed to fight off the darkness, so they were made to be EXTREMELY lethal since that was the reason they were designed in the first place. And if history is any indicator when or if the darkness is ever deafeated, then most likely the awokens and humans will turn on the Exo's since they will see them as extremely lethal threats to their future prosperity, making them second class citizens to try and curve off their initial sole purpose of being. Therefore leading Exo's to have to kill the humans and awokens to live out there life OR Occupy the planets that best suit them and fend off the other races. But that is just me and what i think is the most likely possibility that will happen after the darkness is defeated. What do you think?

I don't think they're robots, rather Cyborgs, or a species in some form of Power Armour (think Iron Man). Exo is probably short for Exoskeleton. Meaning the metal body is their Exoskeleton. My take on the backstory. The travel found the Exo as a slave race. Physically, their bodies are week, so the Travel gave them Exoskeletons to make them strong and fight against their masters, the Fallen. The Exo's and the Fallen had the same home world. The Fallen, received their technology from the Darkness, but the Travel found them when it was more powerful and was able to free the Exo's. This started a great war between the two races, that shared a common home world. Their home world was destroyed and the remaining Exo's came to Earth as refugees. The Fallen followed them, and are now invading Earth. To make the connections, the Fallen are also rely on Cybernetics or augmentations to survive, so it's not a stretch to think the two races have a history.

It is possible that they were first created as exoskeletons for humans since i think the idea of having a fully omnipresent self aware machine with great combat ability and brutal effectiveness most likely didn't fancy their creators. But they must have realized that having humans inside exoskeletons that allow them to have super human abilities and i would believe close to invincible, will still subject them to the "human condition" which could lead to insane delusions of grandeur, and most likely insane psychosis, which will lead them to believe them as a higher class of human being. So they make them into AI instead, but since the technology is from The Traveler, they receive self awareness, allowing themselves to control there own lives, with a primary directive to "protect", it could be easily become from protecting their creators to protecting humanity against the darkness.

they could only terraform planets after they found the traveler which was already terraforming mars. after they found the traveler then humanity was able to colonize the rest of the solar system which is called the golden age.

they were built during humanity' golden age, which was after they found the traveler and occupied all the planets in the solar system. if it was after they found the traveler then most likely they were made with the technology from the traveler. and since i don't think they new about the darkness they most likely made them to fend off the fallen and so on since most likely they thought they were just hostile aliens.
