Though that would remove the tension of "OH GOD! DON'T REMOVE MY FACE PLEASE!" as you reload. It might be annoying, but if you have partners it just adds to the fact you'll need communication so you can reload.
Though your suggestion is pretty solid.

I guess in the annoying column you are referring to accidental usage. It could always be a 3 second hold or so to remove that. Making it very intentional. Still could communicate that you're reloading. Heck you could do that to everyone every time your reload. I can imagine it now. He he.

I think there should be a trade off. At least you could continue to move and dodge with the method I propose, as well as see if something was attacking you. I personally think 1 second is plenty safe, but that is just me.
