And when Marathon went to Windows.... guess what? Bungie had to market to a previously untapped pool of potential customers and gamers who had never heard of them or their games. How did they do that? They advertised in Windows gaming mags, they bundled, they touted the performance on the new platform, they did things that reached out to their new audience. And many Mac gamers felt like the first child when a new baby arrives, that "mommy and daddy don't love me anymore because... well just LOOK at how much attention and stuff that the new kid is getting that I am not!" I've seen 7 year olds resent the new baby because it gets breast fed. I would imagine that long-time fans have been off of the teat for long enough to not expect it every time mommy unbuttons her blouse. The game is the game. Alpha, Beta, and pre-order perks are not the game. They are either testing, marketing, attempting to entice a previously unassociated audience or some combination thereof. They are FLUFF. Fluff that makes the first child resent the new arrival in the family.

All of those things are fine. You know what the DIDN'T do? Give windows more weapons and armor or earlier access to the game. You're not really forming a point here, just throwing old games at me and hoping it sticks.

The game releases for all platforms on the same day. The Beta is not the game. It's not even a demo. It's a load test on servers and a chance for the devs to collect real-life real-network data. Which if you have multiple platforms you plan on supporting, it makes sense to stagger those. But from a players POV? It's an insult. "Mommy is unbuttoning her blouse for that new kid and not for me. She loves it more and me less". Because to them, the Beta is "a version of the game that I get to play" and not a "trial run by the devs". It is however, no matter how much feeling players put into it and the days they "can't play", the latter. Weapons and armor? Aren't there thousands of combinations that once people have been playing for a while, no two will be alike? Again, I don't see "the real insult". It's fluff. And people who get upset over fluff or lack of personal fluff? Well, they are the same ones that Matt was trying to get through to nearly 20 years ago. He didn't get through to many back then (either the ones screaming "sell outs!" or the one's shouting over "players on this platform are your real and loyal fans"), and I don't think that it will get through to many now.

An entire map, weapons and armor is not fluff. It is a component of the game. A weapon skin is fluff. A new cape is fluff. Things that affect your experience? Not fluff.
