Dark souls 2 is honestly one of my favorite games of all time, and I agree with the character points. It lacked a lot of what made dark souls 1 memorable. Remember not wanting to kill Sif? Remember being pushed off a cliff by Patches?remember the first encounter with the titanite demon when you walk past the blacksmith? Remember praising the sun!?!? Or the cutscenes as quelag (spelling?) or the gaping dragon entered the boss area? Dark souls 2 is missing those moments type of moments. The only things I can think of that come close are having the pursuer drop down on your head, the first time you go to dragon aerie, finding the shrine of the heirs to the sun, that's all I can think of of the top of my head. But is this because dark souls 1 prepared us for dark souls 2, or did from just drop the ball?

It's probably because of the new director. While the original director, Miyasami, used difficulty as atmospheric tool - you remember Pickachu and Snorlax - the director for Dark Souls II made the game difficult for the sake of difficulty alone - you remember shrine of Armana? I mean, after defeating Spongebob and Patrick and meeting Gwynevere, I was just so pumped up to kill the next boss, I ran straight to the archives to get insta-blam!-ed by seath. After the shrine of Armana I only thought: Finally I can leave.
